Shanghai you’ve outdone yourself! A napalm attack of riotous rock and roll that was alive and kicking, feral and decadent, and oh so much fun - Carpe Diem returned last Saturday with vengeance featuring four bands - mostly virgins to C’s cavernous appeals - who let it all out.

Things kicked off with grunge-inflicted three-piece alt rockers Kill Automation, a band I stumbled upon whilst scouring LOFAS’ back catalogue (RIP). And yeah, we need more of this in Shanghai - loose, gritty and potent in its delivery - there’s a Courtney Barnett quality to their demeanor - in its stripped-back 90s reverb feedback and its deep cutting unaffected vocals. I dig - hope we see more of them soon. 

Things began to take a turn for the insane with Taco Tuesday’s infectious set - a rollicking descent into the most volatile aspects of pop punk. They have their sound down pat - barreling through one anthemic jam after another, even amongst a crowd that was dipping into delirious euphoria (had to build a wall at one point to save the band from rambunctious interlopers).

High-octane fun but seam rolled me over - and anyone who has a song dedicated to Specters is ok in my book. 

Hangzhou’s Against All is punk rock done right - sincere, reckless yet tightly wound, and embedded with a sense of fun and conviction. Its edges may be sharp but there’s heart deep in their bones, beneath the layers of jinjiu and spunk. 

A firecracker of a band and one that Shanghai dearly needs more of. Audiences fell head over heels for them and so did I. 

I treat a Rat King set like a spa retreat - if said spa involved taking a sledgehammer to every part of your body whilst someone screamed from the deep recesses of their heart, spilling their guts up on the floor. One's body becomes a ping pong ball in the great game of life and because I’m a masochist - I’m in love with every second of it. Praise be. 

Thank you once again to everyone who came out to support the bands, to C’s for letting us run rampant, and most of all - to the bands were gave blood, sweat and tears. Going to need another day to recover.
