Lonely Cookies 浪味仙贝 - Light of The Moment 一瞬之光

Indie pop made with fire-cracker vitality, Hangzhou’s Lonely Cookies are back with their latest EP Light of The Moment. The band, led by Feng Han, has always had a knack for affecting, starry-eyed melodies that are brimming with bleeding-heart enthusiasm - and here those sensibilities are crisper, snappier, and more elevated (trumpets and strings even make their way into the mix). It knows when to pull back and let the harmony lead as on ‘Lonely Cookies’, but also when to let the chaotic emotions come pouring out via reverb and crackling guitars - so when Feng Han sings ‘wish I could break open your brain’ it comes off as both a threat and a profession of love.

Naja Naja - EP

Eccentric cold wave rubs shoulders up against psych rock and post punk in the debut from emerging Beijing duo Naja Naja, consisting of seasoned indie musicians Gou Gou and Yu Hao (also of Last Goodbye). Clockwork neon-soaked melodies full of fuzz, driving bass, and playfully astute lyrics, there’s a lot of fun to be had it the pair’s detached carnivalesque world - which is nicely filled out with looping beats, menacing organs, and other seductive elements that draw you in. It’s endearingly off-kilter, minimalistic in its rhythmic devices yet filled with imaginative kinks - quirky yet jagged enough to keep you looking over your shoulder.

Great John's Cat 鬼冢猫 - Cig Break

Swaying melodies that evoke both smoke-filled lounge rooms in Osaka and beachside trysts, Great John’s Cat may have been borne out of China’s booming city pop scene, but there’s something earnest in the way they arrive at their destination - enjoying the scenery, taking in a magnitude of sights and sounds, and letting it’s charm warm you over. Buoyant and sharp in its musicality, and embedded with an equally playful lyricism, the young Chengdu has a bright future ahead of them.
