Solid Liqui 固体李逵 - Countless Mirages 无浪击石

Shanghai post punk outfit ain't your average post punk band as evident on their wildly twisted debut LP Countless Mirages, out on Spacefruity Records. A psych-laced trip down the rabbit hole that plays out like a Chinese opera gone off the rails, it's amazing how many musical intricacies they're able to pack in - turning each track into a Jenja tower of sharp guitar lines, hypnotic backing vocals, punchy bass grooves and almost indifferent musings sung via wailings. It’s wonderfully off-kilter, both challenging and playful, yet never forgets how to twist itself back into something melodically pleasing. The kind of music that keeps you on your toes whilst giddily awaiting what lies around the bend.

Chengdu ska punks GOINDOWN, who broke onto the punk scene in 2018, and made up of a motley crew of Chengdu regulars, including members of Deep Water, JahWahZoo, GaiWaEr, and more, come out swinging on their self-titled debut. Genuine, foot-tapping punk music that’s earnest, lyrically rich and a hell of a good time - yet embedded with a downtrodden grit and weary heart that makes its message that much more potent. It’s this push-and-pull between its folksy blues side and its spirited ska takes that gives their music its lasting appeal.

Propelled in its first track by pummeling drums, muddy guitars and a singer who wails as if he’s in the grips of madness cursing at the gods on a cliffside, the band are processed in the best possible sense, throwing themselves into their music with wild abandon. Riding that fine line between sappy indie pop and bittersweet emo rock, the band is youth encapsulated - a time machine to a simpler era where emotions ran amuck and it felt like the world was crashing down on you (don’t worry it is - just for different reasons). Musically speaking, it’s effortlessly efficient- with the band able to wing one catchy jangly melody after another with heartfelt conviction. It may just sweep you off your feet.
