Shanghai post metal trio Frozen Cops’ deconstruction of metal is a breath of fresh air on their wildly ambitious yet personal debut 在山的那边. Furiously entwining elements of hard rock, thrash metal, prog, death metal, classical music and even flamenco music with both old school candidness and avant-garde relish, there’s a tenderness at play here - rendering their sprawling narratively rich tracks a softer edge that the genre is not often known for.

Combustible hardcore outfit Rat King, a motley crew of rabble-rousing expats in Shanghai, throw caution to the wind on their aggressively in your face debut Locally Hated. A sweltering thrash-laced hurricane of rock and roll that’ll leave necks reeling, it cuts bone-deep in its defiance, perversity, and chiselled musicianship recalling everyone from Trash Talk to Cryptic Slaughter. Proudly leaving nothing on the floor, and with their middle-finger raised high and proud, they’re one of the finest additions to the hardcore scene.

Sincerely Yours, Sergei 赛吉来信 — Sincerely yours, Sergei Live at Baihuashenchu

Since bursting onto the scene last summer, Sincerely Yours, Sergei out of Beijing have been making waves in clubs for their magnetic performances. So instead of translating that energy into a studio release, the band has wisely chosen to release their first EP in its rawest form - recorded live over two hours at the Baihuashenchu studio amongst the hutongs of Beijing. A swirl of tense noise rock, psychedelic-laced garage rock and pummeling post punk, it’s potent stuff - enthralling and fully-formed - not only leaving you wanting more but anticipating the moment you can catch them live.
