Led by swelling synths, driving bass, pummeling drums and the taut yet delicate vocals of Wen Jun (formerly of Guai Li) which vibrates from desperation to innocence with crackling ferociousness, the band recalls everyone from My Bloody Valentine to Health - yet stands on its own ground. Alluring, challenging, heightened and yes, just a bit overblown – it leaves you dazed.

Sunken Square - one of the finest editions to the indie rock scene in some time - make the kind of savory music that only comes once in a while - one that seemingly refuses to adhere to any particular format and instead relishes all walks of life. Deftly crafted, with both a mischievous streak and a melodic old school through-line, the Shanghai band’s debut is full of wildly imaginative arrangements. Not afraid to drop in a quick grindcore sidebar or straddle a jagged funk riff, their off-kilter musicality is layered these folksy rustic pub crawl lyrics that work their way into your ears, essentially reinventing itself as it goes. A hell of a good time and a hell of an introduction.
