Fazi 法兹 - Folding Story 折叠故事

Xi’an veteran post punk outfit Fazi 法兹, a band that’s has been challenging themselves for well over a decade, reinventing their sound as they see fit, returned this week with their newest LP - Folding Story - and with it an accompanying ‘album film’ directed by renowned photography Jin Shien (with the help of production team greats Geek Shoot Jack). Essentially a collection of ten short films, it’s an ambitious endeavor that follows our lead Chen Tang (and for some time his companion Lang Liu) through sweepings vistas - including the Qilian and mountains Qinghai, as well as Gannan province and Yumen city. Ice streams, snowy mountains, dilapidated towns, and desolate gorges - it’s striking scenery and framed exquisitely as the camera follows these wandering souls. While the story is ice-thin, there’s a warmth and romanticism within the imagery, giving the 44-minute film a playful DIY quality - a travelogue that doubles as a ‘story of an ordinary man seeking his own life path.’
