Jimaoxin 鸡毛信 - 各怀鬼胎

Sprawling, audacious and utterly delightful in its imaginative thrust and swagger - Hangzhou’s Jimaoxin head straight for the cosmos on their debut release. Unfastened one moment - with songs that kick off with meandering ramshackle interludes or dueling instruments - and lock and loaded the next, with everyone jumping in on the groove you didn't even realize was lurking beneath - there’s a serendipitous aura to the psychedelic-colored jazz-inflected arrangements the band has cooked up. It feels above all, ‘in the moment’ - yet cut with the same melodic pop sensibility that made bands like Can and Kikagaku Moyo so irresistible. It’s primal in its rhythmic pull and beguiling in its zigzagging sound - the most fun you’ll have this year with a record.

JieChi 戒尺 - Twenty-First Century Immovables 二十一世紀不動產 

Young Shanghai post punk band JieChi bring their jumble of nerves to life on their promising debut Twenty-First Century Immovables. Grunge-infused, with a mischievous avant-garde streak running through its blemished worldview - the band’s twisted theatrically and saw-toothed musicianship is righteously rough around the edges - delirious in its conviction - turning its anxious-ridden jumble of nerves into verse. With a jagged poetic thrust that’s incisive of the systems that surround us - JieChi often comes off as an art school troupe gone AWOL in the best possible way. Disjointed perhaps but there’s something admirable about a band that doesn’t play it safe.

Hedgehog 刺猬 - Crow Valley - It's All Connected 烏鴉谷 - 暈暈眾生，命命相連 

Since their establishment in 2005, Beijing’s indie stalwarts Hedgehog, have become one of the scene’s most prolific outfits, churning out on average two albums every few years. Their tenth - Crow Valley - It's All Connected - comes a year and a half after A Newborn White Immortal, a release that was hot off their primetime success on The Big Band, and one many felt was subpar Hedgehog. Here’s the thing - subpar Hedgehog is still pretty damn good, and their latest is no different. Geared towards the band’s more grandiose psych-flavored tendencies, its songs are modeled after the fantastical video game-esque world of Crow Valley. Rushing guitars, drums that make every beat count, and entwined backing vocals that swell over the dream-like instrumentation, it may lack the hooks or through-line their earlier work offered, but it’s nevertheless a journey worth taking.
