One of the most exciting new bands to emerge over the past couple of years has been Chengdu’s Riot in School - nineties-dressed alt rock with grit under its fingernails and a pent-up youthful ferocity that’s impossible to annoy. Referencing everything from Sonic Youth to Seattle grunge, it’s potent invigorating stuff - with distortions bleeding into one another whilst maintaining a noise rock pulse that’ll have your heart racing with reckless gleeful abandon. They’ve been dropping new singles with Maybe Mars in anticipation of their debut release, including a music video for ‘Disco’ - which finds the perfect candidates for the band’s wound-up aggression. Blissful of fuzz.

Backspace 退格- Measuring the Length of Night 量夜的长短

Beijing indie rockers Backspace dive into the deep end of their psychosis on their newest EP ‘The Face of the Night’ - a nocturnal-themed slow burn that allows their psych-inflected fireside rock to ferment and swell with moody discourse and existential dread, it presents a different shade of the band. The lead single off the new release is ‘Measure the Length of Night’ with its somber refrain of ‘Better not rise; so as not to measure the night with the length of a piss’. The music video captures perfectly that feeling between sleep deprivation and wide-eyed mania - where time moves at its own pace.

Lonely Leary 孤独的利里 - Exiled from a Rental Room 四点半出走

Beijing post punk renegades Lonely Leary have been breaking through the past year, captivating audiences with their rip-roaring live sets and resonating (and often despairing) lyricism. They’ve been looking to shed their skin and highlight their words with a special unplugged tour kicking off this weekend. To promote and give audiences a taste of what that may sound like, the band shot a killer music video in the viaducts of what looks like Chongqing. And yeah, acoustic Lonely Leary is rad as all hell.
