While the notion of international acts coming into China has long been dead — and quite possibility never to return - another casualty of the pandemic and its increasingly preposterous policies has been expat bands across the country, who have been disbanding left and right. Shanghai bid farewell to two of its bands this week - emo pop punk rockers Flip House and psych-alt indie trio Deku - bands that threw themselves into Shanghai’s music scene with sincere relish years ago - making it a richer place. 

A bittersweet farewell, the bands, with the help of Round Eye and Trash Panda (who I’m certain are eyeing their escape plan) had to seek refuge underground - a semi-private affair that found a room full of PTSD-ridden city dwellers soaking in their first gig since lockdown. Emotional. Cathartic. Overwhelming. And Sweaty as all hell.
