Hangzhou’s Railway Suicide Train continue to evolve on their third LP - a deeply-felt melancholic collection of poetic stories that are as intimate as they are sprawling. While the band retains the mysterious and at times haunting atmosphere of their previous release, this is a much more evocative display of the band’s softer psych-laced folksy side, captured masterfully through its use of strings, wind instruments and choir ensembles. Meandering at times, but there’s an intoxicating quality to how the band reels you in, particularly in the middle section of the album which contains some of the year’s most spellbinding tracks. Like a faded memory that you can’t quite grasp, it lingers long after.

Hoo! - Lalabush

Breakout alt rockers Hoo! return with their newest EP - Lalabush - which finds the young Guangzhou band allowing their vulnerabilities to bleed into their crackling and punchy indie sound. Centered around songs of ‘true disillusionment,’ it showcases a more sensitive side of the youthful act, led by the the dynamic Duo Jun, but it's far from quiet. Even with traces of R&B and power pop needling their way into their sound, the band continues to excel at delivering potent heartfelt anthems that burst with energy and scrappy charm. It may lack the melodic gangbuster spunk of their debut, but hints at a band willing to explore new territory. Color me intrigued.

FunctionLab, the unruly innovative and downright rebellious collective of renegade club producers that’s been putting Hangzhou on the map cut loose their latest - moremore is good - the debut EP from producer ljj555998 (known to most as DJ moremore). Taking the essence of the supersaw sound found in trance music and using the shifting cityscape of Hangzhou as a backdrop, the artist finds emotional uplift in its simmering synths - leading listeners on a neon-soaked journey pulsating with resonance and cathartic release. Evocative of euphoric night on the town that ends victoriously with the sun rising.
