The side project of Chinese Football guitarist Wang Bo, Gentle D•BOY is an inspired slice of city pop that’s both self-aware of its manga-ified view of adolescence and utterly sincere in its contraption. There’s a lot more going on under the hood of D-BOY’s breezy lovelorn world - it’s the kind of bubble gum pop that only a place like Shibuya could dream up. Created by Ladi 拉帝 and the Hanyu Studio, the music video for ‘天下第一贱’ off volume 9 of the Voice of Wuhan of compilation, is a Technicolor delight - a Saturday morning anime inspired ode to the power of love. A feast for the eyes.

Brain Failure 脑浊 - Beat It (Cover)
Long-standing Beijing punk band Brain Failure have plenty of surprises up their sleeves still as evident in their homage to their childhood idol Michael Jackson. An adaption of the hit ‘Beat It’ - the band was originally supposed to remake the iconic music video for the song, complete with sets, pool halls, and props galore - but the pandemic lockdown and quarantine measures prevented this from happening. Hoping to get in the song in time for the anniversary of Jackson’s death, the band was forced the band to improvise, leading to Wang Jian utilizing everything in his home to recreate the video. Brilliant.

Mimik Banka 表情银行 - Little Chinese Boy 小男孩
The ever-evolving Beijing indie act Mimik Banka dropped their newest LP - Dog Days last week. Taking the electronic elements of their previous bedroom-produced EP Vitamin D and seamlessly weaving them in with the band’s instrumentally rich indie sound, the band seems to have opened up their world sonically without sacrificing their acute melodic sensibilities. Alongside the release the band has been dropping various DIY music videos including this European-set home video for their song ‘Little Chinese Boy’. The song reflects on the moment when bassist/keyboardist Tongtong’s universe split as his father decided to stay in a small Austrian town, leaving him in Germany with his mother. Many years later the band visited the small town.
