Police and Pea - the offbeat lo-fi indie pop duo from Shijiazhuang - are the latest act to join the Maybe Mars label. Led by Ji Ziyuan and Ding Xiaolong, it’s the kind of eccentric DIY that hits the sweet spot between shoegaze, noise pop, and synth-filled bedroom pop - a cross between past favorites of ours like Dear Eloise and Yangji. Dancing indifferently between kitsch and grace, between the mundane and the spiritual - it strikes a very specific tone and temperament - one that might get them labeled as ‘outsider music’’. Sometimes off-putting, sometimes beautiful, always honest and always captivating - it’s one of the year’s best - hypnotic in its sweet and sour sensibilities.

Seminal Beijing electronica outfit Supermarket, one of Modern Sky’s first signed acts, return to their roots with their tenth album, 2022我们零零碎碎的 - finding the group dialing back their glitch-filled electronica and allowing their melodic and lyrical talents to bloom. Recalling the work of Nine Inch Nails and Moby, and injected with sprawling ambient-filled slow burns and headier condescend acid techno cuts, it’s in some ways the band’s most cohesive release yet - one whose deep rhythms, taut guitar riffs, trip hop grooves, ice-piercing piano chords, and other flourishes all are in the service of the story at hand.

Crisp satisfying punk made with old school relish and righteous conviction - Old Dolls - out of Nanjing return with their latest Lost in the City 2005. Dubbed ‘the King of Live’ on their home turf, the long-standing band sounds more than comfortable in the studio, keeping everything at a steady simmer, focusing instead on its catchy melodies and direct lyrics. Nostalgia flows through the entire album, which makes sense when considering some of its tracks have been in the making since 2005.
