A normal summer for LiveChinaMusic involves checking out new bands - ones that have been making noise; ones that I've been eager to see; ones that are poised to break big. Usually, if I’m lucky I get to invite them myself to Shanghai. And if not, catch them on the Shanghai leg of their tour or a platter bill cooked up by some of the heavy hitter promoters. This year has been for obvious reasons different - as Shanghai’s music scene continues to lay dormant, idly waiting for an answer of any kind. So to make due, I’ve been leaving the city every weekend intending to catch up with the rest of China - and scope out some of 2022’s rising acts.
My journey back to Hangzhou was to bear witness to a couple of Beijing acts that friends of mine back up north have been telling me to keep tabs on - Sincerely Yours, Sergei and KyoYoko. Young, embolden, bursting with ideas and vitality - well worth the Monday morning hangover.
A swirl of tense noise rock, psychedelic-laced garage rock and pummeling post punk, Sergei, Sincerely Yours packs a hell of a punch. Led by the former (?) Hangnail singer, the band feels fully formed - gleefully throwing audiences into the deep end of their heavy and baroque sound.
Dangerously alluring stuff that’s downright sexy at times. And the addition of clarinet just adds a whole other dimension of musical hysteria.
Meanwhile, while electro alt rock outfit KyoYoko (their original name Kill Yoko is a much better conveyor of what you’re gonna get into) run amuck on the same woozy line between convention and wild unpredictably, it’s a beast of a very different nature. Leaning hard into the bombastic new wave elements that made bands like The Big Wave and AV Okubo such a hit, whilst ratcheting up the dissociative chaos, the band is fun through and through.
And while one can imagine the band working better with a drummer on hand (or even a condescended club version) I much appreciated the no holds barred punk streak that runs through them and their disco dance chops.
Support came in the form of Jimaoxin, the madcap rock and roll psych pop groovers who remain one of my favorite live bands. Despite going through a lineup shake-up, the band brought their mischievous musical hand to their set, twisting their catalogue of songs into new shapes and sounds.
