Green Young
ENGLISH
Born out of the campuses of Shanghai, Green Young steadily crafting their sound and building a legion of fans with their earnest, guitar-driven swaying rock and roll that taps into young adulthood with both sincerity and honesty. I was lucky enough to chat to the band before their special New Year Eve set this Saturday, December 31st at Yuyintang Park.
Q: I often use the phrase ‘campus rock’ to describe a band without fully understanding what it means. But Green Young is truly in the most literal sense a ‘campus rock’ band. How did university shape your band’s journey? What are the advantages and disadvantages’ to developing while attending school?
A:When we were at school, there was an organization for morden music lovers like us, and everyone joined this organization because of the love of rock&roll music; This band is an important condition for the formation of our band. Everyone is in the same school, so rehearsal, chat and entertainment are particularly convenient. But students need to complete classes, do experiments, do homework and many other things. For example, in the exam week, everyone will not be able to rehearse for a long time.
Q:How did the band come together initially? Is there a ringleader? How has the band evolved over time?
A: At the beginning, the members of the band were participated in some covers. Because we often play together, eat and drink together, we feel that we have something special within, so here we are right now. Later, inspired by a senior band, we began to make original music.
Q: Much like a long lonesome walk home at night, there’s a reflective quality to your lyrics that feels genuine - who is the main songwriter in the band? What would you consider the inspiration or catalyst for some of your tracks?
A:Co-written by all. Inspired by all the thoughts of what we see from daily life.
Q: Speaking of catalyst - what makes up the foundation of your music particularly in the creation of a song? Do you start with simply a melody? Is it found in rehearsal or does every member try to bring something to the table?
A: At the beginning, the motivation of the guitar was taken as the basis, then other instruments were supplemented. After forming a general framework, start to combine melody and thinking to compose words.
Q: I’m always curious how young adults’ musical preferences are shaped - what did your band members grow up on musically? Was university a big turning point for your musical tastes? How so?
A: Start from listening to our favorite bands cover their songs, find our favorite phrases and passages to imitate, and learn through imitation. Now is the stage to continue imitating and find our own way of expression. The university is really a changing point of music taste. Everyone has their own favorite style. Through communication and listening, everyone begins to understand the style they have not been listened to before, and then our visions are broadened.
Q: You recently went on tour with another Shanghai band - Sweet Delivery - what was that experience like? What were some of the highlights? What’s the one thing about touring that people forget to mention?
A: This is our first tour since the forming of the band. Unlike the shows before, we need to plan everything by ourselves from the beginning of making plans. The preliminary preparation takes time and energy, but it was worth it when the tour began. During the tour, the experience on the stage was better. All the audience came for us. The interaction with the audience made us more excited in the performance. It seems that nothing has been forgotten. Everything we think of has been implemented.
Q: What are the plans for Green Young? Is there a concern that post-graduation the band will be fall apart or be pulled apart by forces beyond its control? What lessons can you impart on young budding bands getting their start?
A: We don't worry too much about this problem, because we have always had a good relationship and shared goals, mainly because we are very compatible. Although there will be differences in the discussion, most of the results are satisfactory. Make sure that things beside the band are properly arranged, such as work and study, and leave the band as much time as possible.
