2017 - 2018 | Another year of Excellence and Warmth
The year began spectacularly with excellent IBDP (36.5 APS) and iGCSE (70% A* - A) results, representing impressive value added. It was a wonderful way to start the year, with four students gaining the prestigious award of "Best in the World" for GCSE and in addition, two students gaining Best in China awards for iGCSE. Eighteen DCSZ students have won these awards since 2012. We expect even more good news from the Class of 2018, who are already celebrating many offers from prestigious colleges and universities around the world, including several firsts for DCSZ (Oxford, Stanford and Princeton). This all bodes well for IB results day in early July.
An education at DCSZ is so much more than exam results and this year has seen many sports trips, music performances, drama productions, service opportunities, 'China Week' trips and numerous other activities outside the classroom. The sheer volume and quality of opportunities on offer has been phenomenal. I salute the fantastic effort of our staff and parents in preparing and supporting so many events over the term.
Service across the College has been particularly strong this year, in terms of participation, grants/awards gained and money raised. The main activities have been the Crescendo Project (85+ Dulwich students teaching music to migrant children), the ACAMIS Music Room Refurbishment Project (50+ students working at a local migrant), the ACAMIS Hospital Library Project (18 students at the local children's hospital) and the Student Council Orphanage Project (30+ students). In addition, a group of students (SPARK) raised funds throughout the year to help kick start other student-led Cross Curricular Activities and the Prefect team have applied for DCSZ to become a Habitat for Humanity Chapter School.
It has also been a very successful year for Sport at the College with the U19 (Boys & Girls) winning four ACAMIS tournaments and being "promoted" to the next division, the U13 and U15 Netball teams both winning the Shanghai league (a first for DCSZ), 300+ students from across the College involved in our Dulwich FC community football programme and an increase in participation in our core sports programme. In another first for DCSZ, one of our year 13 has received a sports scholarship offer in the US.
Music has flourished at the College this year, with the highlights being the best Christmas programme I have witnessed at DCSZ (including over 100 students performing in a number of Christmas tree lighting events across Suzhou) and a very impressive ISCMS festival (the 11th annual International Schools' Choral Music Society), which we co - hosted with DHSZ. The community also enjoyed an entertaining Junior School performance of 'The Wind in the Willows'.
The Friends of Dulwich Founder's Day is one of my favourite days of the year and I wasn't let down. It was a fantastic day and raised a significant amount of money. Equally successful was the "Great Gatsby" ball which was enjoyed by 236 parents and staff. A great night was had by all.
It has been a privilege to lead DCSZ through its tenth anniversary year and it was fitting to celebrate this with the "founding staff" meal. The event was filled with a palpable feeling of warmth and fondness towards our school, confirming just what a very special place in which to work and to learn it is. Thank you for all your support and have a great summer.
Yours sincerley,
Stuart Bridge
