Video: Online Teaching Showcase

The topic of online learning has gathered pace to become one of the most talked-about aspects in relation to how society has changed in the wake of Covid-19. The path that Dulwich College Suzhou continues to advance upon is one of continuous reflection and improvement.

Mark Jones, our Director of Teaching and Learning talks about Dulwich College Suzhou’s approach to online learning.  Mark develops and oversees a whole College approach to teaching, learning, assessment practice and policy. His role involves leading on other College-wide projects which require an understanding of the needs and specifics of the different age ranges, including co-curricular activities (CCAs), educational technology, and data analysis.

Q

During the whole online education period, what is the most challenging thing for the College and why?

A

The greatest challenge that the College faced in establishing the online education was figuring out how we would take a successful model of education from a traditional school and transpose it into the online environment.

The methods of teaching and learning required in the online space are very different, which meant that we had to undertake a great deal of collective professional development in a relatively short timeframe. The collaboration between teachers, students, and parents meant that the leadership was getting a large amount of information which we were constantly using to adjust and adapt to the new paradigm.

Q

How many times did you lead the team to make changes to the teaching/education structure ever since 3 February, and are the changes effective?

A

We created the Continued Learning Programme (CLP) which was designed to guide teachers as to the most effective methods of education for the differing year groups that they taught. This document went through three major iterations as we became increasingly proficient and knowledgeable about delivering online education.

In addition, we have recently developed a new version of the CLP which aims to harness all of advancements that we have made in the online learning space to enhance the education we provide to students on the campus. We have seen some really effective practice come from our online learning time; for example, teachers are now experimenting more with offering flipped classes, recording segments of classes for student revision, and asking students to curate materials online.

Q

During the online education journey, we have launched timely surveys to parents, conducted regular parent representative meetings and invited further feedback through live parent forums and one-to-one parent meetings. How has the College used all of this information ?

A

As part of our feedback process, we engaged two whole College surveys for students, parents, and teachers.

Some of the highlights were:

- Three quarters of the parent community reported being satisfied with the online learning provided;

- 70% of students felt that teachers understood how to support their learning in the online space;

- 88% of parents reported that that they believed their students were progressing effectively in their learning.

- Only 4% of students felt they had problems accessing the online learning sites;

After each survey, in response to the feedback, I led the team to do necessary reviews of our education delivery.

Q

As an academic leader, how would you see online education influence and change the education model in a world after Covid-19?

Q

I think that the Covid-19 pandemic has changed global education in ways that are still not fully known or understood, but by far the greatest impact, for me, will be the rise of student agency in learning. Teachers have always been with students throughout the learning process, but for the first time in living memory, students of all ages were studying at home, supported virtually by teachers and physically by parents. This has resulted students taking much more ownership over the learning process and being responsible for organising their time effectively.

Teachers have had to design learning experiences which can also respond flexibly to differing student needs and interests without the benefit of engaging with the students in the same physical space. Dulwich College Suzhou has always placed a premium on student agency which is why I feel our students were to adapt to the challenges so well.

The following video demonstrates how our teachers across the College conduct online teaching. This new blended model is quickly becoming one aspect of the ‘new normal’ within teaching & learning practice. Our dedicated team of teachers and education experts are adapting and learning fast to equip our students for a future which is undefinable.

A

A

A

- 四分之三以上的家庭表示,对远程教育的效果满意 ;

- 只有4%的学生表示在远程学习当中,进入教育系统有问题;

- 70% 的学生表示,他们的老师很了解如何支持他们;

A
