摘要:This talk will present two research topics in the area of business process management, showcasing up-to-date research outcomes in the context of two joint grants between SYSU and QUT that are funded by The Science and Technology Department of Guangdong Provinceand Guangzhou Municipal Science and Technology Innovation Council respectively.

Topic 1 –Discovering Organizational Models with Overlaps via Organizational Mining

Organizational mining aims at gaining insights for business process improvement by discovering organizational knowledge relevant to the performance of business processes. Akey topic of organizational mining is the discovery of organizational modelsfrom event logs. While it is common for modern organizations to have employees sharing roles and responsibilities across different internal groups, most ofthe existing methods for organizational model discovery are unable to identify such overlaps. The overlapping resources are likely to be generalists in anorganization and existing findings in process improvement have proven that generalists can help increase the flexibility of a business process. This topic will focus on an approach capable of discovering organizational models with overlaps and address associated underlying technical challenges.

Topic 2 –Towards the Design of a Scalable Business Process Management System Architecture in the Cloud

The ubiquity of cloud computing is shifting the deployment of Business Process Management Systems (BPMSs) from traditional on premise models to the SaaS paradigm, aiming to deliver Business Process Automation as a Service to multiple tenants in the cloud. However, scaling up a traditional BPMS to cope with demand from multiple organizations in the cloud is challenging, since its underlying system architecture has been designed to serve a single organization with a single workflow engine.A typical SaaS often deploys multiple instances of its core applications anddistributes workload to these application instances via load balancing. However, for stateful and often long-running process instances, standard stateless load balancing strategies are inadequate. This topic will focus onthe design of a scalable system architecture for deploying BPMSs in the cloud.
