Deborah Ellis is an award-winning author, a feminist and a peace activist. Deborah penned the international bestseller The Breadwinner, as well as many challenging and beautiful works of fiction and non-fiction about children all over the world. Her most recent book is Sit, which tells the stories of nine children and the situations they find themselves in, often through no fault of their own. In each story, a child makes a decision and takes action, be that a tiny gesture or a life-altering choice.
Deborah has more than thirty books to her credit, winning the prize all over the world. In 2017, The Breadwinner debuted as a feature animated film.
Deborah is a passionate advocate for the disenfranchised. She “walks the talk,” donating most of her royalty income to worthy causes including UNICEF. She has donated more than one million dollars in royalties from her Breadwinner books alone.
THE RIGHT WORDS CAN CHANGE THE WORLD

Deborah Ellis thinks that a pen, a book, a child and a teacher can change the world. Because we can not only reach out to the big world, affect and change the world by ourselves, but also affect the people around us, so they also get a sense of their own possibilities.
Asked about her thoughts on creativity, Deborah thinks that creativity is about how you take what it is and imagine what it can be. You have to use the creative part of your brain to figure things out on your own. That’s part of the excitement of being a human.
Deborah has done a lot to support women and children. Her greetings to the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) brought her threats from the Taliban, but she continues the focus on the women’s plight there.
Besides her work with vulnerable women, she primarily writes for young people, especially for those dispossessed children that deserve more protection and a world to play. She writes with a child’s eye, in the way children look at things, and in her writing she always finishes with a sense of hope.
Deborah decided to be a writer when she was 8 or 9 years old, but didn’t have anything published until she was 39. In all these difficult years, she just kept writing and reading. Want to know how she made it in the end, and what you should do if you also want to be a writer? Let’s listen together to Deborah’s story!
