语言课程学术主任
Samuel Ryan
Samuel 老师以优秀成绩取得了教育硕士学位,并持有英国的教师资格证。他于2008年至2019年于广州英国学校任职。与此同时他还是NASSEA语言读写课程和TESMC课程的持牌导师,牵头组织了不少语言习得主题的活动和会议,在12年的教学生涯中,他在外语教学、外语课程开发和外语学习方案制定方面积累了丰富的知识。
在最近的五年中,他负责管理小学部的EAL英文课程和学院教职工,为各种能力的语言学习者制定了学习英语国家课程的策略,包括全校课程开发、家长研讨会、员工培训、教学框架搭建、联合教学等等,并成功将其推广应用于小学部,他与团队开发的语言习得教学模型在亚洲的各种教育会议中被视为最前沿的教学法。

Samuel has completed a PGCE with merit and gained Qualified Teaching & Learning Status in the UK. From 2008 to 2019, he has taught at The British School of Guangzhou. Also serving as a licensed tutor in the NASSEA Language & Literacy course and the TESMC course, he has continued his CPD as a leader in language acquisition across many events and conferences.
During his 12 years’ teaching career, he has developed a wealth of knowledge in teaching, curriculum development and provision for additional language learners.
He has been managing the Primary EAL curriculum and departmental staff for five years. The biggest impact he has had in this role is developing strategies for language learners of varying proficiencies to be able to access the British National Curriculum and having these strategies implemented across the primary school. The work in this role has covered all areas of education including policy development, whole school assessment procedures, inclusion links between SEN and EAL, whole school curriculum development, parent workshops and staff training, scaffolding, co-teaching and more. The model Samuel and EAL departmental staff have developed is considered as the language acquisition pedagogy at the forefront in several Asian conferences.

Why do you want to work in NAS Guangzhou?
我对双语教学十分感兴趣,中国课程与国际课程的融合实属大势所趋。作为两位中英混血孩子的父亲,我的家庭和12年在中国的生活经验都让我对中国学习者、中国式父母和中华文化有着更深的理解。
由于我之前主要针对有外语学习需求的中国学生设计国际课程内容,所以我十分高兴能加入双语教育团队。基于以上个人背景和工作经历,加入广州诺德安达学校对我来说是一个绝佳的机会。

I am very interested in bilingualism in education and find it a fascinating prospect to link Chinese curriculum and International curriculum together. My 12 years’ work experience in China, and as a father of bilingual children, have allowed me to develop a deep understanding of Chinese learners, Chinese parents and Chinese culture.
My experience of planning international curricular content, predominantly for Chinese students with additional language needs makes me very excited to join this team. For all of these reasons, the move to NAS GZ feels like a fantastic opportunity in tune with my background and experience.

What is your understanding of bilingual education?
教育中的双语现象已经遍布全球,并且每年都在发展,特别是在中国。不同于世界上的其他国家,中国的学校教学必须与国家义务教育课程紧密相连,这种情况非常独特。中国义务教育课程正在逐渐被国际认可,尤其在数学领域。
显然,随着中国在科技上日趋领先,我们可以从中汲取精华,打造坚实的学习基础。在严格实施义务教育课程标准的同时,融入国际课程的精华,将为我们的学生提供一个别具匠心的独特学习环境。

Bilingualism in education is a worldwide phenomenon and one that is growing annually, particularly in China. The China context is a very unique one, as it is one of the only countries in the world that we are bound so closely to the motherland’s national curriculum.I see this as a fantastic opportunity. The Chinese National Curriculum is gaining international recognition, particularly in mathematics and with China’s growth as a leader in technology.
It is clear that we have a strong foundation to build exceptional learning experiences from by bringing this together with the best parts of the international primary curriculum, which will create a very unique school for our students.

How would you make the most of the difference in culture?
我会采用联合教学的合作方式。联合教学将使双方对国家义务教育和国际课程有更加深入的了解,并且建立共识。这就是我所期盼的真正的双语教育。
就中华文化而言,我在学校和个人生活中一直都充当着连接中西文化的桥梁。我既可以帮助家长理解老师,也可以帮助老师去理解家长。针对中式学习行为,我可以提供各种不同的分析角度和新颖的解决方案,能够更好地了解孩子们也对整个教师团队有着积极的影响。

Co-teaching. Co-teaching will bring about a deep understanding of Chinese curriculum teaching, IPC teaching and create a collaboration of shared understanding. This will also be a truly bilingual approach and something I am very excited to see brought to a bilingual context.
In terms of Chinese culture, I have always acted as a bridge between west and east in my school and in my life in China. I can help parents to understand teachers, and teachers to understand our parents. I can offer extensive insight into Chinese learner behaviours and provide those new to the China context of the why. This will all have an impact on our teaching teams as we better understand the children we are responsible for.
