Making Myself at Home in a Nursing Home by Sandra J. Gaffney

English | October 15th, 2012 | ISBN: 0826518648, 0826518656 | 201 Pages | PDF | 1.36 MB

Sandra Gaffney entered her first nursing home for long-term care at the unusually young age of fifty. Fourteen years earlier she had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Over the next sixteen years, Gaffney lived in nursing homes in Florida, Virginia, and Minnesota, as the ways she could be close to family changed.

She describes her situation in these words: “As a nursing home resident, I require total or maximum care. I have limited use of my hands and arms. With special splints, I am able to turn the pages of my books, use the telephone and TV/VCR/FM radio remote control. When my cup is positioned properly, I can drink independently. I am able to walk with a platform walker and the help of two nursing assistants.

My walking is not functional; it is only for exercise. After I moved into my third nursing home, I learned to operate a power wheelchair by using an adaptive switch between my knees. … All other areas of physical care have to be done for me. My speech is impaired. If people listen carefully, they can understand what I am saying. … I am able to eat regular food and breathe on my own.”

Gaffney became an acute observer and strategist about how to live in a nursing home. Her first-person account, dictated to family members and assistants, covers making the decision to enter a nursing home, choosing the right one, and understanding its culture.

She talks about how to furnish your room and about all the issues that arise in a resident’s typical day. She has much to say about communication with staff and family about “how to help others help me.” Gaffney’s daughters, Amy and Bridget, and her friend Ellen Potter provide additional perspectives on the caregiving experience.

Biographies & Memoirs

The definitive biography of the world’s number-one reality star, Kim Kardashian West—the savvy entrepreneur and fashion forward woman who has defined fame for today’s generation—from the UK’s leading celebrity biographer.

A thoroughly modern woman, Kim Kardashian West, the daughter of headline-making lawyer Robert Kardashian, grew up like a princess in a Beverley Hills mansion. As a young girl, Kim’s ambition was to appear on The Real World, the groundbreaking hit series. But reality proved even bigger than her dreams, when just a few years later she became the star of her own smash show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

While Keeping Up with the Kardashians took us into Kim’s privileged world and made her a household name, the details of her life story—murder, elopement, domestic violence, a sex tape, a quickie divorce, religious worship, and unbelievably glamorous designer fashions—played out like an X-rated version of the 1980s soap opera Dynasty. But Kim’s story has only just begun. Married for a second time—to one of the biggest stars on the planet, Kanye West—she has begun her own dynasty with the birth of daughter, North, and another baby due in November 2015.

Filled with delicious, painstakingly researched, eye-popping detail, KIM uncovers what it took for Kim to rise to the top—and how she intends to stay there.

Commissary Kitchen: My Infamous Prison Cookbook by Albert Prodigy Johnson, Kathy Iandoli

English | October 11, 2016 | ISBN: 0997146230 | EPUB | 118 pages | 7.9 MB

Meals are perhaps the most important aspect of prison life. They keep inmates alive, both physically and emotionally, as mess halls and common areas provide a level of social interaction in an otherwise lonely situation.

Albert “Prodigy” Johnson served three and a half years in prison, and during that time his focus was on his health—an almost impossible feat behind bars, where many inmates often enter the prison system healthy, but leave with diabetes and hypertension. Commissary Kitchen provides a deeper perspective of what it’s like to consume meals in prison.

While recipes are provided, Prodigy and co-writer Kathy Iandoli also tell various anecdotes about situations in prison involving food. Meal prep in prison is very limited, so while this work appeals to anyone who has served time or is curious about prison life, it also speaks to those who prepare food with limited access to various cooking luxuries (such as college students in dorms). While the work is informational, above all it humanizes the prison experience in a way that has never been done before.

Albert “Prodigy” Johnson is a multi-platinum recording artist and member of the legendary hip-hop duo Mobb Deep. In 2006, Prodigy was arrested for gun possession and served a three-year prison term. In 2011, he released his first memoir, the critically-acclaimed My Infamous Life. Since then, Prodigy has continued to release both solo projects and albums through Mobb Deep, touring worldwide. When he isn’t touring, Prodigy is traveling the United States, lecturing at venues like MIT about the prison system and offering insight on changing the quality of inmates’ lives.

Kathy Iandoli is a critically-acclaimed journalist and author. Her work has appeared in publications such as Pitchfork, VICE, Maxim, Cosmopolitan, the Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and many others.

David Maurer, Luc Sante (Introduction), “The Big Con: The Story of the Confidence Man”

ISBN: 0385495382, 1606710001 | 1999 | EPUB | 336 pages | 2 MB

The classic 1940 study of con men and con games that Luc Sante in Salon called “a bonanza of wild but credible stories, told concisely with deadpan humor, as sly and rich in atmosphere as anything this side of Mark Twain.”

“Of all the grifters, the confidence man is the aristocrat,” wrote David Maurer, a proposition he definitely proved in The Big Con, one of the most colorful, well-researched, and entertaining works of criminology ever written. A professor of linguistics who specialized in underworld argot, Maurer won the trust of hundreds of swindlers, who let him in on not simply their language but their folkways and the astonishingly complex and elaborate schemes whereby unsuspecting marks, hooked by their own greed and dishonesty, were “taken off” – i.e. cheated—of thousands upon thousands of dollars.

The Big Con is a treasure trove of American lingo (the write, the rag, the payoff, ropers, shills, the cold poke, the convincer, to put on the send) and indelible characters (Yellow Kid Weil, Barney the Patch, the Seldom Seen Kid, Limehouse Chappie, Larry the Lug). It served as the source for the Oscar-winning film The Sting.
