Futuristic Tire Fights Pollution and Produces Oxygen
The new tire is futuristic, transparent and literally green, because it’s filled with moss.
“This concept tire called Oxygene would be for mega city of ten million plus inhabitants,
where you would have about two million five hundred cars in this, in the city.
Looking at these trends you see urban greening coming.”
The moss inside the tire absorbs CO2 through tiny holes in the rim which it converts to oxygen.
That process photosynthesis requires sunlight, which explains why Oxygene uses a transparent wheel.
The tread pattern allows the tire to absorb water which moss needs.
Combine sunlight, CO2 and moss, and you get oxygen.
Besides reducing pollution, Oxygene generates its own electricity by harnessing the energy created during photosynthesis.
The new tire is made with rubber from recycled tires, which also reduces waste.
“We have traditionally struggled to dispose of all recycled tires, so how do you get around that?
And that they are looking at it that, and they’re trying to find solutions, you know, it has to be a holistic approach.
It can’t just be the car makers worrying about the engine in the car.
There are all sorts of environmental challenges through car production and through running a car.
And Goodyear are trying to address that.”
Oxygene must still undergo extensive field testing before the concept tire comes to life.
But Goodyear says that should happen in the coming months.
