自家宝藏，不假外求

Don't ask anyone else for

the treasure you possess.

1.

大珠慧海到江西参马祖时，

马祖问他说：你从何处来？

Dazhu Huihai paid a visit to

Mazu in Jiangxi.

"Where are you from?" askedMazu.

2.

慧海说：我从越州大云寺来。

马祖说：来这里做什么？

慧海说：我来求佛法。

"I'm from Dayun Monastery

in Yuezhou." replied Huihai.

"What do you come here for?'

"I come here to seek Dharma."

马祖说：你不往内看自家宝藏，

却到外面乱找一通干什么？

我这里一物也无，

你来求什么佛法呢？

"Why are you making this frantic

search instead of looking at your

own treasure? I've got nothing.

What kind of Dharma can you

expect to find here?"

4.

大珠慧海立刻礼拜问马祖说：

什么是慧海的自家宝藏？

Dazhu Huihai immediately

bowed respectfully and asked,

"What is my owns treasure?"

5.

马祖说：现在你问我的这个，

就是你自家宝藏！

一切具足更无欠少，

使用自在何假向外求觅？

Mazu answered, "it's the very

question you just asked!" That's

all you need and you're free to

use it. Why do you have to

search anywhere else?

6.

慧海一听便明白：

自识本心，不由知觉。

于是跪拜礼谢马祖道一禅师。

Huihai understood at once.

Kneeling down in gratitude, he said:

Now I recognize my own heart though

I don't understand how.

（总言之）

佛在灵山莫远求，

灵山就在汝心头。

人人都有与生俱来的佛性，

佛就在我们内心；

到心外求佛求法，就如同

缘木求鱼，骑驴寻驴。

Buddha lives in the Soul Mountain,

and you don't to go far in search

for it, because it's right in yourheart.

Everyone was born with Buddha-nature

and Buddha lives right in our hearts

To seek Buddha and Dharma

outside your heart is like looking

for fish in a tree or searching

for the donkey you are riding.
