What u have been through... | High Talk No2
We got 12 good English speakers on 25th Feb, which is much beyond my expectation. Thanks to all who love Hireading Club. We are still trying best to find the good way to let all these interesting, self-achieving guys get a High Talk.
This time our topic is What you have been through during the Spring Festival....We got many key words like: reading, detist, relationship, algorithm, movie...
The following is three of the best pals among the team. They really talk into deep discussions and are able to summerize what is in their mind. Hope to see you all join this next time.
Mr Kang (back from Michigan, USA):
During my spring festival, I spent some time in studying machine learning algorithms. Besides that, I just enjoyed TV shows for most of my holiday. I watched Singer 2018 up to the latest episode, the whole seasons of Singer 2017, and some other similar singing competitions.
Not only I watched their performance, I also read lots of comments posted by users. I would recommend Hanggai band and Hua chengyu. I am not familiar with their names before but I think their music are quite good.
I also watched two Chinese movies, Operation Red Sea and Chinatown Detective(2). They are pretty decent movies too. I'd like to recommend watching these two movies if you haven't yet.
Dr Li (back from Germany) :
Every springfestival holiday, I have to spend 1-2 days on-call at the hospital. Frequently I cannot be with my family at the Chinese New Year Eve. Thus the springfestival holiday only means several days for rest, being with my parents, seeing relatives and friends.
During this holiday, I have read a book"These people, those things" written by Wu Nien-jen, who is the best story-teller in Taiwan. Thisbook is a short story collection, and includes several quite moving stories.
For two days, I had time revising a manuscript, and submitted it to a journal forpublication. It is not easy to find such a block of time in working days. For three days, I was at my hometown. It is interesting to meet my classmates, and I have an opportunity to know the differences between Beijing and a northern small city, especially the differences of the health care system.
High Talk feedback:We had a great time during the hightalk on Feb 25. It is striking that Jack read 10 books in about only 3 days. Nowadays, a large amount of my time is occupied by Wechat, zhihu, etc, and procrastination. I need to manage my time moreefficiently in the future.
Ms Zhang:
During my spring festival holiday, I went through some speechs by 陈果 and 张德芬 on Internet to check out what's the general good attitude when we face the life and love.
Also I read some books wrote by American female to have a general idea of their thoughts, <lean in> ( 《三十岁前别结婚》). Finally I read a book call <how to heal your heart>( 《心的重建》) by Louise Hay.
Very inspiring, open-minding. It gives me a totally new view on how the human can face the different ' losing ' ,for instance breaking up,relatives’ passing away, losing jobs....
Ms Li (back from NYC, USA):
I really enjoyed the Spring Festival. It was a good time to talk with my family and relatives. They may ask the same question, " When you would get married?"........
I thought they just care about me and found some topics to talk.
A very embarrassing issue was I pull out one of my wisdom tooth. But I met an unprofessional dentist, which left me some unhappy memories. The dentist used some tools to knock my teeth with a long time and then I had a fever for 3 days. I even can not work because of this. I hope I can find a special dentist next time, so that I will feelbetter in the process.
High Talk feedbak: It is my pleasure to have an English talk with book friends.I asked three questions, which some book friends thought it was meaningful.
First of all, Did you speak English in daily life and how frequent you spoke?Second, did you think studying abroad was a wisdom choice? And did you think working in foreign companies was a proud thing now?
For Q1, most of book friendsdid not speak English after back to China and they also like the English talk. For Q2, most of book friends thought it was worth. Going abroad can improveyour insight and individual life ability. Several book friends felt they didn'tfit well after they came back. Because some overseas students really cannot finda decent salary after they came back. We also hope you make this choicecarefully because HRs had their rules. For Q3, foreign companies in China maybe still a good choice, but not only one.
Ms Guo (back from France):
This Spring Festival holiday is a big one for me. I got three people around me having passed away. I hope any of you treasure what you have now, however bitter themedicine is , however tough the work is, however nervous the relationshipis.....Once you live and see the new sunshine, you have chance to win back what you desire.
Vocabulary I got: stomatology hospital 口腔医院; trachea 气管; Senile dementia 老年痴呆症
Ms Chen(back from USA):
Personally speaking, I do not really like Spring Festival since it is the time you have tovisit your relatives. With a big family, my visit in Spring Festival could lastseveral days. I still remember spending about 1 week to visit important relatives in my childhood. Fortunately I only needed to spend 1 day for thisjob. My visit to Hubei Provincial Museum was a true pleasure too. With my owneyes I have witnessed the famous Goujian Sword. After 2000 years, it still liesintact with the shine of power, waiting for people to appreciate its real soul.Listening to a Chime performance was the other enjoyment which made me feelpeace and harmony, that is something modern instruments could not do. What I really want in holidays is actuallyreading and writing. Luckily I had 2 days for myself so that I continued towrite my novel which was based on the world view of Buddhism. I read severalBuddhist scriptures so I was able to draw maps for my story. Yeah! I have drawna clear picture for the background.
Ms Gao(IP lawyer):
This SpringFestival is a heavy one for me. My grandpa passed away 3 days before Chinese new year. I felt so sad as I am his favorite granddaughter, and I had strong attachment to him. I spent a lot of time thinking about life and death these days. It is the first time I meditated this issue seriously. My grandpa is just an ordinary man, but he means a lot to me. His influence and love on me would be carried on. I also learned the importance of company and showing of love. You cannot imagine how much a smile, a hug, and the word "I Iove you" to your family, much more than presents. I will cherish every moments with my family, try not to be shy on saying these sweet words.
I also read a novel 《金阁寺》written by 三岛由纪夫 during the holiday. I have planned a trip to Kyoto for a long time, and made a list of Japanese books to learn much about their culture. I didn't understand this book as it is too tragic and sad, I just cannot follow the protagonist's mind.
High Talk Feedback: I had a good time with our book friends. I am impressed by their insights, rich experiencesand knowledge. Someone read 5 books, some read even 10 books. Woh... There is a Chinese phrase suitable for our get-together "一见如故".
Jack Ren(back from Switzeland):
My Chinese New Year holiday was negligible.
I stayed with my parents in Beijing for the Chinese New Year holiday. We cook at home every day,and occasionally go out for a walk. I read in the most of the holiday, and some of them are really full of wisdom. In addition to reading and accompany my parents, I interviewed an operational manager for Red-dog, a cocktail bar in Sanlitun. Now she is taking over my position in the bar and I am preparing another venue for the company. This CNY holiday was neither interesting nor worth memorable, yet it was productive!!!
Ms He(back from Britain):
This year is my second year with my family after finishing my study in UK. I had good time with my family at the Spring Festival. I am the only child in my family. After coming back to China, I realize my parents are growing old and my responsibility is more important to care about them.
I have been reading a book “Walden”, written by Henry David Thoreau. After the book club, I read this book again. This book talks about the relationship between nature and modern society. Henry lived bythe lake and watched nature. He watched everything, for example, birds, woods, lakes and so on. He described them and wrote down what he reflected. This book emphasize on how beautiful the nature was. I read this book ten years before, and I did not understand what he wrote. This book was quite abstract for me atthat time, but now I understand more. This book lets me realize how importance of nature. He also wants us to shoulder our duty to protect our globe and our livings, otherwise we have no space to live.
Mr Lin:
This Spring Festival is a lazy holiday for me. Because I can take a chance to have a good rest. I just prefer to watching movies to relax, Operation Red Sea etc....I found most people are impressed by the Chinese Navy military’s advanced equipments. And they apparently have more and more confidence on our national defense ability and power. I believe most of us witness our country improvement, just like President Xi said that a big country should have its own style(大国就要有大国的样子).A great upheaval will happen soon sincemore than one thousand years and we are proud of joining that...
Hope to listen to you and read your word here next time!
Bonne fete !!
