On the 9^th of October, the organization of the Ping Yao film festival announced their program. And even though it is, as called by the organization, “Ping Yao Year Zero” it might be a small festival, but it is one with a broad vision.

Since the Cannes Film Festival of May this year, there haven’t been many international film festivals. But the volume of produced films, and their content is rich. So organizing a brand new festival, one like Jia ZhangKe（贾樟柯）  needs a lot of courage.

So how does the media, the honored guests and the public perceive the festival? And how exactly do you hold an international film festival in a 2000 year old city?

About the site 

The Ping Yao film palace is located at thewest street of Ping Yao County. In total there are 6 screening sites. 

The main stage of the festival, located in the park, has a capacity of 1500 people. The opening ceremony as well as several screenings will take place at this site. 

In the evening of the 27^th October there was a rehearsal for the opening ceremony. Due to some mistake, the people who came to exchange their ticket were locked out. Even though volunteers can be seen everywhere, none of them seemed to be able to help. It became clear that most of them do not seem too familiar with the way the festival is organized. 

Just after the screening of <<Estiu 1993>>(Spain) in the 小城之春 theater. The overall quality of the screening is not bad, the only problem is the massive water puddle people have to cross to get from the security checkpoint to the ticket center. Since it is winter, and it is freezing cold, the organization should take site management more seriously. 

About tickets

The Ping Yao International Film Festival Wechat group is the only platform where tickets can be bought. Of course it has its convenience, but when we went to pick up our tickets we quickly discovered there were many problems. 

Not to mention the bug in the system, which made it quite troublesome to buy the tickets, but also the 580 RMB ticket fare lead to some suspicion. Since the 2 biggest events, namely the opening ceremony and the Ping Yao Film Night, are open to the public, many ticket holders wondered why they had to buy the ticket. Was it just a way for the organizationto make some easy extra money? However, this way, where anybody can participate in the film festival, also made many feel gratified. 

Before exchanging the ticket, many people were also wondering how the seating would be organized. 

Someone on Wechat wrote that whoever comes first could sit in the front. So, naive as we are, we went very early.. 

We are used to buying tickets through a third party, which allows us to sit wherever we please. But at the Ping Yao festival it does not work like this. You first buy a ticket, where you will be seated depends on how lucky you are. 

We asked a volunteer how the seating was arranged, and how the seats were divided under the seat holders. Unfortunately our question remained unanswered.

About the organization 

After the organization of the festival announced their program, they received unanimous recognition by the industry for its open and diverse programming. The films are organized in the following section: the Crouching Tigers, dedicated to discovering outstanding directors; The Hidden Dragons, pays special attention to genre cinema from all around the world; Galas, consisting of heavy weight films; New Generation China,designated for new voices from all around the country; Best of Fest, a selection of the finest films from 2017s film festivals. 

It can be said that the enthusiastic fans of new films and the industries focus on this new emerging creative force form aperfect match at the Ping Yao International Film Festival. 

The new festival with its 6 screening sites, and ambassadors as Fan Bingbing(范冰冰）, of course needs many security and service personnel. 

The red carpet is at the Ping Yao Movie Palace at the main road. That the security around that area is strict is understandable. A little strangr though is that the park, which partly is next to the red carpet, isopen to the public. So the people who come to the park early do not have to go through security, but they might be very lucky and get a glimps of the redcarpet glamour.

The Ping Yao Palace has more than A-Nspaces, except that there is a exhibition about film, there are ticket centers,screenings, conferences, forums, and a banquet. The paradox is that in the public spaces the flow of people constantly needs to be controlled. This makes it feel a little uncomfortable.  

The documentary <<医院里的中国>> of the young director Chen, once screened at Camera Stylo also received an invitation to the festival. But, except the release of the film << Depis>>during the openings ceremony, we have nothing more we can tell you about the films in this section. How mysterious!
