I first met Liu Yuanyuan (here after referred to as Liu) when I just graduated. At that time, I devote myself to preparing for studying abroad and being a part-time teacher in Xiamen University. However, Liu was a sophomore and was one of my first batch of students. I was deeply impressed by her once I entered the classroom not only for hernon-bookish fashionable dress but also for her sharp eyes that are full of aspiration to knowledge. Inspired by her, I became more serious about every class. At that moment, I had never imagined that we could become like-minded friends many years later.
In 2013, I finished my study at Netherlands and came back to Xiamen. I joined the army of career-creating talents to jointly run a company with onegraduate colleague, selling wall decoration products. For the first two or three years during the initial stage, work was really hard. Luckily, company operation stepped into a new stage of smooth and stable development. Moreover,we reached the objective set during the initial stage: realize financial independence with the least amount of energy. My co-partner began her life in Australia and I came to realize that I could have much more time to do something else.
Coincidentally, Liu founded the brand of MSPECTER in2013, just half a year after she graduated from the university. During the past three years, sticking to the faith that newborn calves are not afraid of tigers, Liu had successfully achieved her abstract business outlook designed when she was a student after going through countless difficulties and hardships. Thus, due to the same identity as an entrepreneur, we tended to contact with each other more and more frequently. Liu was still sharp and was full of thirst for knowledge. Communications with her made me feel urgent to acquire more knowledge, force me to pursue self-enhancement, and constantly reflect my own shortcomings. For me, I always felt lucky to have such an intimate friend. During the conversations with me, she usually mention that she really cherished the memory of the state concentrating on art at her student period : the state in which she could reproduce, view, recognize, and reflect herself in the form of art by raising questions and exploring the questions with herself as the subject. In July, 2016, we had a dinner together and talked about the ideas of jointly starting doing something. Afterwards, this project was started.
This project is simply originated from my daily conversations with Liu. It reflects our comments on the current hot social issue. Seen that nowadays it is an era of information explosiontime and it’s hard to tell the truth of information, people gradually tend to express their viewpoint in an all or nothing way and are used to ignore the existence of the opposite viewpoints, which makes less and less people be willing to spend time in thinking about the cause and effect of each affair or viewpoint. Due to both of our inherent characteristics of stubbornness, we all like to probe into the root of each matter. Therefore, we always enjoy turning the recreational afternoon tea into a serious criticism meeting. Additionally, we take pleasure to pose our vivid chat on the public space, internet, to share with those who love art, philosophy or fashion. That’s why we found JSW.
By Jin Jing
【What’s wrong with this world?】
In this year, when I talk to Jin Jing (here after referred to as Jin) we always sigh: “What’s wrong with this world?” It seems that the entire world is locked into precipitancy and uproars of the new Millennium. People tend to have less time to explain and persuade and be less willing to spend time in predicting and reflecting. On the contrary, people are increasingly inclined to be clear at a glance instead of exploring the evidence. Just as Book Cover Studies, we are more likely to be attracted by some sort of simply, symbolic, and gimmick marketing concept. More and more people are unconsciously influenced by the media to shake hands with violence, war, and mediocrity. Advertisement hypnotizes most people to live in peace with the artificial environment.
【Speak for ourselves!!!】
Influenced by internet, the basis of public culture is gradually eroded by media culture. Comments of mass media usually involve no logicand rationality; the relevant concept application is vulgar; and the phenomena, mechanical application, can be found frequently. Therefore, all the above factors make us use the so-called common sense inappropriately. As pointed out by the famous scholar Liang Wendao, public intellectual is the speaking group desperately needed in the current era.
Therefore, taking the advantage of this trend, Jin Jing and I are deeply convinced that we need to speak for ourselves. Although the strength of we two is weak, we add, at least, a new type, value, and faith to the speaking group.
The current era is an era filled with assumptions. First assumptions are firmly entrenched in people’s imagination which not involves the really reason. However, imagination can only be invigorated by chain reaction, terrorism connection between matters. This reflects the randomness of symbolism with terrorism as its visible epicenter. Thus, what we should do is to eliminate the assumptions to deeply analyze all of the triggered matters, such as the evidence chain generated during the case being heard by police or procurator as well as the intensive reading, reading method adopted by ancient people to summarize the principle from each single word or sentence before the printing method being invented by Johannes Gutenberg. We oppose obscurantism while we hope that there could be more reasonable and serious academic study to make our viewpoints be of more universal value. We aim to furnish our customers with nourishment for the mind when the entireworld concentrates on material needs.
After the project name decided, we coincidently find that JSW, abbreviation of Jie Shi Wu, is exactly the mirrorsymmetry of the famous financial magazine the Wall Street Journal, which is both the coincidence and driving force. We hope that one day JSW will match the fame of this giant financial magazine.
