We have this modest front- and backyard where no flowers are planted, no cats raised, but occasionally wild squirrels would emerge and old ladies living next door would come over to hang their clothes .
There is also a decent coffee pot and a library. Coffee beans and original books are often brought back by our founder and colleagues from all parts of the world, aside from lavazza and el croquis, both in constant supply.
In addition, there are several bright skylights that have become the focus of attention from architects paying visits. Natural lighting barely offsets the energy consumption of the air-conditioning. Yet the carbon footprint cannot be kept at zero due to frequent late night overtime.

New life injected into an old lane
The studio is located inside a non-typical building on one of Shanghai’s typical former French Concession lanes. The space has become more integrated, with highlighted unobstructed natural visual connections between the interior and exterior after the renovation, in which the initial structure remains unchanged. An occasional glance back during intervals, through the transparent French windows and skylights on the sloped roof, reveals constant changes in the shades and lights outside, making us feel closer to the ever-changing environment.

As for space usage, the initial parking garage at the entrance has been redeveloped into a big meeting room, whose double glass door leads to the front courtyard and front gate, forming a continuous space along with the community space outside, thus making it a potential communal workshop.

The ground floor space functions as the main working area, in which an array ofsections, such as the mini-exhibition hall, coffee bar, model workshop, Solarium, equipment room, bathroom, storage room, fan out around a nearly 5-meter-long project-file cabinet.

The first-floor space with tall ceiling height is defined as a co-working area, which is designed to satisfy the basic demands of administrative management. It also contains two open-plan working clusters-three separate office rooms, and a specially developed library housing architectural publications available in English and Chinese.

We have been showing as much respect for original books as for original buildings. This place is devoid of the scene of pirated-book sellers peddling books and magazines. Instead there is a fixed budget earmarked for one of the studio’s staff to purchase quality publications worth reading and preseving on a regular basis. The purpose is not to refer to any of the latest trends, but to offer the studio a clear and diverse architectural and cultural coordinate in a design process coming full circle.
Diagram of materials
Ironmongeries
Interms of material and detail, the arrangement of each structure and componentis in response to the attributes of the space, part of which they are, and their programs. For instance, rounded adamas-aggregate terrazzo flooring with different steel gray hues, brass layering, cutting and finish methods, the door and window system composed of angle iron, recycled wood and brass handles designed in-house and handcrafted on the scene, arc chamfers between white painted brick wall and openings of doors and windows, elements such as the foyer, staircase handrails, windowsills and bookshelves made of bended black steel sheets. The hues and textures of materials and the relationship between space, lights, shadows, programs and the site resulting from and extended from the mix of these materials is not something that can be expressed through renderings, because they can only materialize through experiments and practice in the real world.
