Amid slower global economic growth and reduced demand for labour forces arising from technological progress, most of the businesses prefer investment in attracting seasoned professionals and building up their image in a conventional manner while the more foresighted ones choose to commit themselves to long-term philanthropic programmes, which involve the discovery and encouragement of talented youth to innovate, in a bid to inject fresh blood to the industry and facilitate development – a mission that makes them proud. This issue and the next one will showcase a series of international programmes alike, the way they inspire professionals in the fields of applied technology and design, who are at critical stages in their career, to give full play to their creativity, and usher them into the new stage of their career.
In September 2015 the fourth biannual edition of the Prix Émile Hermès design award called for submissions from design enthusiasts worldwide with the theme of “Play” as applied to domestic design. More than a recreational activity stimulating the imagination and the senses, the simple act of play builds character and self-knowledge, and gathers individuals together, illuminating and influencing our relationships with others, according to the theme narrative. The jury panel chaired by the established designer Matali Crasset has shortlisted 12 works from a total of 762 entries whose creators are from 62 countries. The finalists are about to showcase their works at the exhibition held at Espace Commines between 31 May and 5 June 2016 and meet the challenge regarding whether their works could stand the test in an interactive environment.
The Prix Émile Hermès was founded by the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès, which has, since its founding, gained worldwide reputation for its significant contribution to visual arts and performance art. The launch of the design award marks the foundation’s expanded support for the art of design. The award, which is also a philanthropic programme, encourages young designers to create new works that are beneficial to environmental sustainability and show fine artisanship, in an active response to the existing and prospective needs of society.
2016 winning project: Clico is an augmented reality construction game for children. Clico brings an object constructed by the player to life, using a mobile app and a tablet computer.
2016 winning project: “trikado” is a variation of the pick-up sticks game, a wooden trolley with a set of accessories (fabric, rope, velcro, lamp, batons, connectors…) that can be combined in infinite, imaginative compositions. The game inspires free play, inviting children to create their own space.
Since its creation in 2008, the Prix Émile Hermès, a biannual design award, has promoted talented young designers and supported their prospective, early-career projects.
2016 winning project: Vibrato is a wooden box fitted with an electro-magnet that activates a metal blade concealed beneath a leaf of paper. The device allows the user to vibrate objects or forms placed on top of the paper, in a random, ever-changing ballet.
2016 winning project: Demi-jour is a shadow-game in the form of a collection of cards which can be fixed to the back of smartphone, like a case. To create the shadow pictures, simply unfold the relief shape in the corner of the card (images of objects or figures) and activate your camera flash or assistive light. Then you can animate the figures in a darkened room.

2016 winning project: Your Shelter is a wooden trolley with a set of accessories (fabric, rope, velcro, lamp, batons, connectors…) that can be combined in infinite, imaginative compositions. The game inspires free play, inviting children to create their own space.
As of now the Prix Émile Hermès International Design Award has entered its fourth year, with the 2008 award themed “Everyday Lightness”, the 2011 award themed “Heat, me-heat, re-heat” , the 2013 award themed “Time to yourself” and the 2015 theme of “Play”. According to the design brief, the craftsmanship and know-how during the manufacturing process shall be factored in and the circulation of the finished works shall be sustainable and environmental-friendly. All this bears testimony to the award’s commitment to inspiring bold explorations of the object’s significance and uses and active response to real-world needs.
Young Bird Plan is a high-caliber design competition of YoungBird and big-event marketing program with long time frames and multiple phases targeted at young design enthusiasts. With excellent resources integration, competition organization and quality control, the Competition offers custom vertical publicity of its sites to expand its global influence.
The most notable advantage of the Competition is that it focuses on implementation, providing its contestants with the opportunity to turn their first work into a reality while standing out. Not only does its complete regime ensure high caliber, it also offers participants more experience. At the updating phase, they improve their work under the instruction of their mentor and coordinate with the client, material supplier, engineering consultancy, construction and supervision companies, leading the entire process. Such practice propels them to become experienced architects with independent thinking.

Active on the frontline of architectural practice, the mentors, most of whom has overseas education or cultural background, have exerted a huge impact on the society and won plaudits within the industry, with their outstanding works and concepts. They have their own ideals and upbeat attitudes toward life and keep practicing. Their instructions could thus make contestants feel their sustained passion for architecture, the most moving part in the whole project, which is much more effective than indoctrination in textbooks.

Mentor: Zhu Jingxiang, Zhang Li, Huang Shengyuan, Zhang Bin, Matteo Scagnol. (left to right)
Young Bird Plan
The most extraordinary feature lies in the founding of the six-member jury panel. The organizer has long adhered to the principle that it should be multidisciplinary, allowing the judges to review the finalist works from the perspective of decision makers in diverse segments. Their comments and decisions make contestants realize any excellent work requires not only a good idea, but also recognition by such decision makers.
The past three seasons have attracted more than 400 higher education institutions specializing in design and 1,000-plus design houses to participate, with a total of over 5 million views of its online platforms.
Since its founding in 1905, the Swiss luxury watchmaker Rolex has been pushing the limits of watch-making craftsmanship, and in the meantime assisting creative, rising talent to make contributions to the global art community. In keeping with its tradition of supporting individual excellence, the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative was created in 2002 to seek out gifted young artists from all over the world. It is a philanthropic programme that a specialized team based in Rolex Geneva headquarters oversees.
Over the past decade or so, Rolex has paired artistic masters (mentors) and protégés in dance, film, literature, music, theatre, visual arts and architecture for a year of creative collaboration in a one-to-one mentoring relationship.

Every two years Rolex brings together artistic masters and key opinion leaders from the creative industry to form an international advisory panel, which is tasked with keeping themselves informed of the general trends across these seven areas, the latest developments in the art community, and seeking out and inviting some of the world-renowned masters, who keep making progress in their respective field with a strong interest in nurturing the youth, to join the panel.
According to the rules, young artists are not allowed to apply for the programme. Instead, a seven-member expert panel is commissioned with selecting protégés across the world in accordance with requirements of each of the mentors. Candidates are limited to those young artists who have made major advancements in their own career.
In 2002, San Jijia became a protégé to the renowned dancer and choreographer William Forsythe – then of the Ballett Frankfurt.
The Rolex Arts Initiative dictates that the mentors spend at least six weeks (30 work days) with their protégés and each mentoring pair will have the liberty to decide how best to use their time in the most creative and productive way possible. In addition, each pair will receive a 25,000 Swiss francs worth of funding and logistical support.

At the end of the mentoring period, each protégé will receive an additional 25,000 Swiss francs for creating or publishing new works, putting on performances or participating in public events. Rolex has been keeping in close contact with the protégés by voluntarily tracking their career development.

There have been a total of more than 400 artistic masters and KOLs who have participated in the Rolex Arts Initiative since its launch. A global network of emerging artists from more than 40 countries has been set up.
Last month the Chinese electric-vehicle maker NIO has released the NIO EP9 model, which is promoted as the world’s fastest electric vehicle. An emerging company specializing in the R&D of high-performance, intelligent electric vehicles, the car maker has, ever since its inception, been committed to nurturing the youth from diverse cultural backgrounds as a way to facilitate innovation in the electric automobile industry. This initiative originates from China and NIO represents the future of the domestic electric automobile industry.Founded in 2015, the Formula Student Electric China (FSEC) is dedicated to encouraging college students to innovate and practise.

The FSEC preliminary rounds of selection are carried out within universities and contestants enjoy the liberty to form a team. The contestants have one year to design, examine, manufacture and road test their racing car before entering the finals, according to the documentation released by the Rules Board of the Organizing Committee. The FSEC matches are all about nurturing the talent, with the finals merely reflecting the effectiveness of the previous phases. In this sense the FSEC is a typical education and practice programme.
The evaluation process is focused on static performance and aerodynamics. The referees - veteran engineers and marketing personnel from automobile manufacturers, institutes, distributors and parts suppliers – tend to put questions to the contestants and give advice on further improvements based on their own experiences, which contributes to the rapid growth of the talent.
At the car-making stage, the size of teams ranges from 40 to 140. But the organizing committee has only 20 certificates every year for each of the teams. Those 20 members are technically from varied majors and departments because a diverse group of talent is required to fill the posts of team manager (operation), team leader (technical), marketing department (public relations), technicians for different parts of a vehicle, cost assessment (accountant), drivers, etc., all of which almost constitutes a mini automobile company.
The talent emerging from the FSEC matches will be able to undertake much more responsibility than just research and development. The one-year collaboration will enable these youth to grasp the know-how regarding all phases of vehicle development, the procedures for positive development as well as the most cutting-edge knowledge and know-how in the industry, gain first-hand experiences and meanwhile become aware of the importance of team work.
Part of the champion award comes from the operational expenditure, encouraging the champion to broaden his/her view by traveling abroad. Since 2015 the FSEC and FSE champions have participated in the Formula Students German (FSG) on behalf of the Chinese teams and there have been teams with abundant personal funds that have taken part in the lower-cost matches held in Japan.
