Hongqiao World Centre, a flagship project of Greenland Group, features large building volume, high density and multiple functions, which is a big challenge for design. As the core architect team of this project, UA stood out from all the other rivals in international bidding. Many foreign standard-bearers for architectural design have voices in the construction process, including Frank Owen Gehry, SOM, BIG and so on. Almost all leading architecture groups choose to superintend the building process on site and guarantee the execution of design. Every step is arranged in fastidious detail to give designers the most complete access to manipulating the growth patterns of building and, as a result, to perfectly present the construction.

今天,我们将解读一个建设在中国的项目—虹桥世界中心,从中了解UA的设计团队对建筑师责任制的诠释。
We will put an interpretation on Hongqiao World Centre, a Chinese project, in the hope of giving some insights into executive architect from the perspective of UA design group.

Hongqiao World Centre lies in the Hongqiao Business District that is the pivot of Shanghai, the world’s sixth largest city group. It is adjacent to the well-developed Hongqiao Transportation Hub, and the imposing National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC). As a premium supporting facilities provider, it is able to accommodate the overflow of NECC’s opportunities and fortune.

UA的设计师们认为,作为上海门户地区的代表性建筑群,虹桥世界中心需要拥有不俗的建筑形象,需要与在气势上国家会展中心形成呼应。然而,因为虹桥世界中心位于虹桥机场航空限高区内,无法以高度夺人眼球。所以,设计师们在平面上花了大量心思。
Designers in UA believe that as a land mark building complex in the heart of Shanghai, Hongqiao World Centre should beunique enough to correspond with the ambience of NECC. Governed by the building height restriction in the area of Hongqiao Airport, it is doomed to lose the chance of catching eyes by heights. Therefore, designers switch their attention to the plane layout design.
从一开始的街坊式的“七巧城”设计概念,到第二轮方案中更具中心凝聚力的中心云轴设计,经过多轮的方案修改,到最后终于形成今天我们看到的“花开盛大,心心相映”的“向阳花”概念方案。
They proposed a scheme named Qiqiao city at the first beginning, and the second one is a more concentrated axis design. After prudent revisions, the sunflower scheme framed in grand blossom moments came into being.

虹桥世界中心的整体形态与虹桥国展中心“四叶草”的形态相呼应,各个建筑单体以“花心、花瓣、绿叶”的形式有机排列组合,组成“向阳花”的形态。“花心”与国展中心轴心对位,遥相呼应,构成区域内最具辨识性的建筑群。
In response to the clover leaf concept of NECC, the buildings are organized coherently to direct circulations, presenting an analogy of sunflower. The center of flower is aligned with its counterpart of NECC, attaining the most identifiable building clusters.

同时,花瓣、花叶的多层独栋办公建筑设计形态,既使地块密度适中,易于营造舒适环境,又使单层建筑面积符合中高端企业的使用需求,符合了业主对后期运营的要求。
These independent multi-floor office buildings are constructed in the shape of petals and leaves to ensure enough spaces among architecture, creating comfortable environment. Meanwhile,the floor area is guaranteed to fit the needs of future high-end enterprises as well as the operation demands for client.

花心独创性的将三个独立的办公建筑通过悬索玻璃幕墙连接,满足了超甲级企业对于独立办公空间的需求,同时在形体上化零为整,扩大了建筑的体量,增强了“花心”在建筑群中的凝聚力。也与国展中心的四叶草相呼应,形成了地块独有的气场。
Three independent office buildings are connected by cable-suspended glass curtain walls to inventively create the center of the flower as well as satisfy all requirements of separated office spaces for super grade-A enterprises. Accordingly, the building volume are assembled and enlarged, strengthening the centre part’s cohesion. As a perfect match for the clover leaf-shaped NECC, it cultivates a unique atmosphere.

Architecture designers need to be oriented by spatial demands of future users and think prospectively, to improve people’s working and life styles by means of space design innovations.
虹桥世界中心的设计中,绿色、共享,是设计师们提出的核心理念。花心将三栋建筑通过玻璃悬索幕墙连接后,形成了中央的44米通高的共享大堂。曲面玻璃为这个空间带来了时尚感,而44米的挑高使这个空间气势不凡,体现了超甲级办公的尊贵。同时也通过这样的共享空间,使人们有了更多的公共活动与交流场所。
The basic design principles of Hongqiao World Centre are green and shared. Cable-suspended glass curtain walls link three buildings together to make room for an impressive public lobby which is 44 meters high, manifesting the exalted level of super grade-A office buildings. Curved glass helps to give a fashion flavor to this space. In addition, this kind of shared design provides more spaces for public activities and communication.

为了给办公人群提供更多户外空间,花瓣的每一层都进行了退台设计,为每层办公都提供了露台花园,实现办公环境花园化,将办公环境与生态环境有机结合。而露台层层后退,则恰好形成了花瓣绽放的形态,使建筑造型更加优美。
Every storey of the petal-shaped buildings is designed with a stepped terrace garden to offer more outdoor spaces for office workers. It is a close integration of work circumstance and eco-environment, achieving the goal of garden-style office. The terraces step back by tier, which appears to be the moment of blossom, making the image of buildings more charming.

容积率的压力下,花瓣与花心间的空间有限,在花心较大建筑尺度的压迫下,如何防止这片空间产生压抑感?退台式的建筑恰好化解了这种压抑感,使有限的空间变得开敞,形成中央绿谷,为办公人群提供了绿色、开阔的户外空间。
The plot ratio limited the spaces between petal-shaped buildings and the heart part. The task came on the heels of great building volume: how to prevent the sense of repression in this section. Stepped architecture is a dose of good medicine to relieve the strains and offer broad views in limited space. The green valley set in the center part provides verdant and open outdoor spaces for office workers.

建筑从概念到建成,这中间的过程远比想象复杂的多。从幕墙深化到结构的搭建,这其中涉及到幕墙公司、机电工程、结构工程等庞大、复杂的团队。UA的设计师团队在这漫长、复杂的过程中,始终参与到每一个环节中,以保证建筑最终的完成度。而各种先进技术手段的应用,也帮助设计师们能更好的控制建筑实现的各个节点。
From concept to completion, the building work is unimaginably complicated. During the construction process of curtain wall and structure, a slew of teams need to be involved in, including the manufacturers of curtain wall, companies of electro-mechanical engineering and structural engineering, etc. The team of designers in UA has maintained participations in each step of this lingering and intricate process, in order to ensure the completeness of buildings. They also adopted various advanced technological measures to better control every single detail of construction process.

投标方案中花心的平面是一条封闭的自由曲线,在深化设计中,它被优化成了六段弧线组成的有理数曲线。由于剖面上的收分,在模型中外围护结构的玻璃幕墙仍然是由曲面玻璃组成的。
In the final scheme, the plan of the center part was designed as a closed free curve. It was subsequently optimized and divided into six curved segments on rational number. The margin in section detercmined that the glass curtain wall of building envelope in the model should be constructed by curved glasses.
而在考虑建造的需求时,曲面玻璃并非最佳的选项,更多的模板,更高的成本,都是施工精度、现场进度与工程造价无法承担的。如何把8949片玻璃尽量控制在少数几种尺寸规格,并且保证这8949片玻璃能一块块准确安装到龙骨上?设计团队接下来做的工作看起来不像是建筑师习惯做的画图匠,而是化身数学家。因为不可能一片一片的来绘制设计,必须要通过参数化的方案得到批量处理,通过Rhino、grasshopper等,进行了大量的数据运算与核对,动态的观察调整规格后的效果,设计师们才终于将建造和设计紧密的联系在一起。
In this project, curved glass is not the best option to the whole construction process. Because it represents more modules, higher cost, and unmanageable construction precision, schedule control, and budget. How to reduce the sizes of 8949 pieces of glasses to the least available numbers and make sure them set accurately on the fixed keel? The architecture design team seems to take the role of mathematicians to batch the data through parametric modeling of Rhino, grasshopper. After enormous data operation, crosscheck, flexible adjustment, the architecture and design were closely intertwined in the end.

为了建筑的建成效果,为了帮业主控制预算,设计师针对8949片玻璃提供了详尽的设计数据。建成效果玻璃幕墙圆润平滑如设计师所愿,造价也控制在了业主的预期当中。
Designers elaborated specific data for 8,949 pieces of glass, with the aim of achieving better performance whilst controlling budget. And it eventually comes out that both the smooth surface of glass curtain walls and the construction cost meet designers and owners’ expectations.
第二难点是两大玻璃曲面之间的交接,往往被忽视的交接部位在象牙这里被发挥成为了着力设计的重点,并被赋予独特的形式。
The joint part between curtain walls was the second-biggest challenge, which we tended to overlook. A unique shape of ivory was attached with great importance in the design process.

设计师顺着曲面玻璃扭转的方向做了一根不锈钢的象牙,像立体的雕塑一样从草坡直升到45.00米的标高,转了90°的转角向花心的中间汇聚过去。
An ivory-shaped stainless steel is customized along the twisted way of curved glass. The 45-meter high sculpture ascends from the lawn and turns at an angle of 90 degree at the apex, facing towards the center part.
象牙的空间形态首先被建立在Rhino模型中,然后被转化成594片不锈钢板材,定位每一片的四个角点,2376个角点数据。而单单从平面上是无法充分定义象牙的,因为同层的不锈钢板角点并不在同一标高上。所以还要增加了高程的信息输入进去,才能最终准确定位象牙形态。
Initially set up by Rhino, the pattern of ivory was divided into 594 pieces of stainless steel panels with four angular points noted, marking a total data number of 2,376. However, the ivory-shaped stainless steel could not be defined only in plane dimension. Stainless steel plate in the same floor are actually not in the same height, so elevation information should be imported to define the ivories.

第三个难点是悬索玻璃幕墙的结构体系设计。花心一共有三片悬索玻璃幕墙,每片面积达630㎡,后侧是高度达44米的花心中庭,最宽处跨度将近27米。原本幕墙顾问提供的结构方案是一分为六的方案,这就意味着从中庭向室外看正中间有一道宽1.5米的竖向结构了。如何把这个从幕墙背后拿掉,问题又摆到了建筑师的面前。
The third difficulty is the structure design of cable-suspended glass curtain walls. Each wall is 630 square meters in area with a 44-meter-high central courtyard situated behind, and about 27 meters in width. The counselor for curtain walls at first proposed to divide the whole structure into six parts, which meant that a vertical structure with a width of 1.5 meters would be exposed when viewing from courtyard to outside. Architects should figure out the problem of taking away this element from the curtain walls.
前面提起的象牙又一次启发了设计师们。象牙是两大片玻璃幕墙的交界线,同样,悬索幕墙与相邻的玻璃幕墙也有一条交接线。只是象牙是阳角的交接,需要用力为之,彰显身姿。而悬索幕墙的收边是个阴角,需要隐蔽为之,大音希声。
The ivory-shaped steel marks the boundary between two glass curtain walls, illuminating designers once again. There is a similar borderline between cable-suspended curtain wall and glass curtain.The former one was designed as external corner, which should be highlighted. And the latter, internal corner, needs to keep a low profile.

于是设计师做了一个门式结构的方案,用一个倒U型的钢结构体系支撑起来这一片悬索幕墙,高高挂起,轻轻放下,原本在中间无比显眼的结构在幕墙的尽头找到了合适的存在位置,不再会引人注意。
Given that, designers worked out a scheme of gate structure, an inverted u-shaped steel girder, to support solidly the cable-suspended wall. This design also balances the previous conspicuousness of middle structures, and the outcome turns out harmonious.

► 中庭的见与不见
See it or not in the courtyard
与往常设计的办公建筑相比,花心“人”字形的中庭系统是个很重要的特点。一般来说,办公建筑的中庭都是独立于建筑内部,而花心的中庭通过三片悬索玻璃幕墙形成,一片正对国家会展中心,另两片则与场地内的轴线相呼应。当人站在大厅中央穿过通透的玻璃幕墙向外望去,两边则都是被精心设计的对景。
The most distinctive feature of the courtyard that differs considerably from typical office buildings is the inverted V-shape. Most courtyards of office buildings are separated from the surrounding construction.Yet the one in this heart part is encircled by three cable-suspended glass curtain walls. One of them faces towards the direction of NECC, and the other two walls echo with the axis of the field. The lobby also offers well-designed opposite scenery views across the transparent glass curtain.

但是,这却给机电设计带来了很大的难题。在展览建筑、交通建筑中用于大空间的空调系统放在这座办公楼里是不适合的。而且为了提高大厅的亮度,顶部也被设计了整体的玻璃天窗,那么在顶部增加设备系统的可能也被否定了。
Thus, electromechanical design faced a serious challenge. It is totally unsuitable for this building to copy the air conditioning system worked in large space, such as exhibition building, transportation building. The glass skylight in the roof is designed to enhance the light condition of the lobby, yet it imposes limitations on adding more equipment systems at the top of buildings.
于是机电顾问提出了若干解决的建议,天窗增加电动开启窗?或者悬索玻璃增加电动开启窗?但是前者造价高昂,维护困难,考虑到踩着玻璃过去检修的话,对玻璃的荷载要求又要上升一个档次。后者的话悬索幕墙上面加开启扇窗框效果就像锦衣上打了补丁,也是不可取的。这个时候的建筑师让人觉得吹毛求疵,各种可能性在他们眼里都有着这样那样的缺点需要规避,必须要有百无一失的方案才能被认可。
The counselor for electro-mechanism put forward several proposals, including the attachment of electronic opening windows to the skylight or the cable-suspended glass. However, the former solution would cost a fortune to construct and maintain, let alone improve the load bearing capacity of the glass because repairmen need to step on it. It was also inadvisable to choose the latter one, because the outcome would appear like a poor patch on the finery. Architects at this stage fastidiously pick every potential hole, and only a perfect scheme would be approved.
最后空调机电被设在一个人的视线里不会被看到的位置,只有从剖面和节点图中才能一探究竟。设计师将天窗整体抬升了1100mm的距离,然后向外侧偏移1500mm,让人在中庭看不到天窗的边缘,将空调体统置于此处,隐藏了起来。
So, where did the system eventually settle on? At a blind corner where we can discover only in the section and node program. Designers have elevated the height of skylight by 1,100 mm and moved outward by 1,500 mm to block the view of skylight’s margin, where is exactly the hideaway of air conditioning system.

► 当不同材料相遇在建筑里
Amixture of different materials in architecture
当不同特性不同构造的材料同时出现在建筑中的时候,往往有很多细节问题需要进行细致的处理,看似简单,实则需要考虑的问题有很多。
When we integrate varied materials with diverse properties and textures into buildings, there is a plenty of details that need to be meticulously considered and worked out. This process is deceptively simple.

在花心主入口的月牙雨棚这里,象牙,草坡,玻璃采光顶,四样材质,四种构造拥在了一处,如果不谨慎处理,建造腐蚀、漏水等许多问题。
Four materials converge at the main entrance, including crescent canopy, ivory-shaped steel, lawn, and glass skylight. A barrage of underlying problems would arise due to incautious treatment, such as erosion and leakage.
对待草坡和月牙雨棚得交接,设计师采用了“划清”界限的做法。本来覆土、植被和金属就是不宜相互接触的材料,混在一起时间久了腐蚀漏水都是问题。于是设计师划了一条沟,做好了排水的措施,让覆土能被边缘截住,让蜂窝铝板也在这里收头,两者隔开150mm,看似很近,实则不会接触。
There is a clear boundary between the lawn and the crescent canopy. Soil, vegetation and metal are essentially different from each other, which we cannot blend them together for a long time, because of inevitable problems of erosion and leakage. Thus designers dug a 150-mm-width gutter to drain water off, and intercept both the soil and aluminum honeycomb plate.

而象牙与采光顶的交接处,玻璃和金属近似垂直的相交到一起,玻璃本身也是有转折的角度,象牙恰好装在这个钝角上。形成了六个交点。怎么处理这个地方呢?
At the junction of the ivory-shaped steel and skylight roof, the materials of glass and metal meet at almost right angle. The curve of glass is at an obtuse angle with the steel installed, forming six points of intersection. Then, how to deal with this part?
玻璃和不锈钢都是可以精确施工的材料,设计师们在模型中提取了所有交接点的空间坐标,根据坐标制作玻璃与不锈钢的物料,幕墙设计好细部的构造,再根据构造反推模型虚拟建造查验错误,确认无误后工厂根据尺寸定值构件,然后现场安装,材料就精密的对接到了一起,严丝合缝。
Both glass and stainless steel are able to be constructed accurately. Designers collected all the data of spatial coordinates at the junctions of the model, and accordingly elaborated every structure detail of curtain walls, including the materials of glass and stainless steel. Only when the materials pass simulation testing, relevant components with customized-size could be fabricated and assembled on the site perfectly.

► 如何把136个单元排列到立面上?
How to arrange 136 units on the façades?
在方案的最初阶段,花瓣以及其他叶子的立面是由横向的白色铝板与玻璃组成的,单独一个建筑来看并无不妥。但是如果作为整体来看,就会发现这横向的线条一直绵延伸展,令人的视线容易疲惫,无法停留,于是设计师开始思考,如何给这冗长展开的立面上增添一些不一样的元素,使得人们的视觉焦点可以在这过程中跳跃起来,看到些有趣的元素呢?
The building façades in the shape of petals and leaves were originally planned to utilize lateral, white aluminum plates and glasses as components. However, taken as a whole, the transversal panels would guide people’s sight to a weary extent. Designers hoped to add some creative elements on the stretched façade and pull back people’s visual focus.
设计师首先在距离中央花心最近的花瓣上开始了实验,进行了多个方案的比选,最终,决定在玻璃幕墙外侧设计斜向立杆,由外向里密度渐变,体现出速度感。
Designers started tests at one of the petal-shaped buildings, nearest to the center part. They made a comparison of different pitches and determined to set slant poles outside the glass curtain wall with a density gradient from far to near, making people feel the sense of rhythm.

在此基础上进行设计深化,将斜撑的跨度定义成三片玻璃的宽度,从而减少了对于室内视线的影响,与层间铝板连接的部分倒了圆角,从而平滑的与铝板相接。留出少许的安装距离,容许了施工误差对平整度的影响。对斜撑的位置经过了反复的推敲之后,最终定下的136个斜撑单元一一排列在了每片花瓣之上。
Further design adjustments are made on the above basis. In order to reduce the impacts on indoor vision, the span of diagonal brace are designed to be equal to the width of three glasses, thus forming rounded corners with laminate aluminum plates. The construction errors would not affect the flatness because of short intervals. Based on a prudent analysis of position, the final 136 units of diagonal brace are arrayed regularly at each petal-shaped building.

而另外的方案并没有浪费,外置彩釉玻璃板和内嵌彩釉玻璃两种立面方式被应用在了南叶和北叶。在南叶,彩釉玻璃随着层数增加逐渐减小,顺序移动,形成了一种变形的透视。
Other schemes played roles, too. In the façades of southern and northern buildings, the color glazed glasses are fabricated both outside and inside. On the southern building, the sizes of color glasses gradually reduced, forming a distorted sense of perspective.

虹桥世界中心在建成后,花心大堂总是被各种展览、活动的运营方青睐,成为各类活动的举办场地,这是设计师都没有想到的。
Since the completion of Hongqiao World Centre, its lobby has been an active venue partner of different exhibitions and activities, which is beyond designers' expectations.
除此之外,虹桥世界中心高端、精致的办公环境设计甚至吸引了众多影视剧剧组前来取景拍摄。全民关注的《欢乐颂》中,安迪的办公室就是在虹桥世界中心的一片花瓣之中。
What’s more, the high-caliber and exquisite office environment design in Hongqiao World Centre attracts film and television production crews for on-location shooting. In the popular Chinese TV series, Ode to Joy, Andy’s office is set in one of the petal-shaped buildings.

花心大堂的多功能应用,或者花瓣大楼被影视剧组的青睐,也许是无心插柳。但也是UA的设计师们从空间使用者的角度出发,对空间进行了细致、超前的设计,才赋予了空间多样的可能性。
All the additional functions of lobby and office buildings are unintentional outcomes. Anyway, it is because of UA designers’ commitments to user-centered principles, efforts to contrive the space plan painstakingly and farsightedly, that these places feature enormous potential.
虹桥世界中心的设计品质与建造品质是如何实现的?当我们追本溯源,不难发现答案。UA的核心建筑师制度,有别于建筑设计行业以施工图设计院或者甲方建筑师为核心的传统作业模式,在这个项目中,协调工种,连接一切,作为信息中枢的工作是由UA建筑师担当的。核心建筑师直接承揽业主下达的任务,综合施工图、幕墙顾问、 施工总包的意见完善设计,面对各方提出的问题予以设计上的解答,同时走进施工现场,巡场并建造施工的全过程。从而保证了设计的质量。说到底,对于一个项目了解最深的,永远是核心建筑师,对于同样的一个问题,各个工种会给出各自专业立场的不同解答,但核心建筑师给出的是一个更综合客观的判断,通过协调各方,获得当下最完美的解答。
How to ensure the quality of design and construction for Hongqiao World Centre? Answers are obvious when we trace the source. The basis of construction process in UA is different from the working modes of traditional architectural design industry that either construction drawings design institutes or party-A architects take charges. In this project, UA architects undertook all the responsibilities of coordination and information delivery. Architect Director is responsible to contact with client, to perfect the project design by integrating construction drawings and the suggestions of counselors for curtain walls and builders, to provide design solutions to different problems raised by all parties, to supervise the whole construction process on the construction site. The director is always the one who has the most comprehensive knowledge of the project. Different professionals have their own standpoints for the same question, yet the director adopts broader vision and more inclusive strategies to offer an impeccable solution.
其实我认为中国大部分开发项目已经是建筑师负责制,只是负责建筑师由甲方建筑师和乙方建筑师共同组成。这种情况短时间内很难会有根本的改变。所以,UA的策略是先不谈建筑师负责制,先把核心建筑师的角色做好,。核心建筑师简单来说,就是方案设计主创建筑师去主动承担设计总包的工作,以城市设计和公众利益为出发点,以建成效果和成本控制为导向,协调各设计分包单位,并适度延伸服务界面,积极介入施工管理和后期跟踪。虹桥世界中心就是一个典型的案例。实践下来,基本达到预期效果,一个感触是:“功夫总在无声处”。

Most of development projects in China have already applied executive architecture, except that the director force is comprised of party-A and party-B architects. It is difficult to make radical changes to this fixed routine of work process in a short period. Hence UA leaves the executive architecture aside for now and focuses its attention on the architect director’s duty. We actively shoulder the burden of general contractor, coordinate subcontractors’ work, and extend our services to supervise and track the construction process, on the basis of urban design and public interests, in order to control the building outcome and budget. Hongqiao World Centre is a model of UA’s principles, and we have achieved our expectations. As the saying goes, “Tiny details determine everything.”

As a chief designer and a Chinese architect, I am proud to complete this flower-shaped project with multidimensional curved glass walls, which is an integration of creative design and advanced technology. We really tried to interpret the regional features and infused our understanding into the buildings, on the basis of urban megastructure context. We also inventively solve the planning difficulties in the 600,000-square-meter area marooned in the middle of High Speed Rail Station and NECC.
