Untouched nature and
diversity in Yichang
Yichang in Central China's Hubei province is striving to protect its natural environment while at the same time boosting its tourism industry. CHINA DAILY
Going green brings more than its fair share of economic benefits to city in Central China Yichang, which is noted for its hydroelectricity and cultural resources, always considers environmental protection a top priority when developing its tourism.

The city in Central China's Hubei province is the birthplace of famous poet Qu Yuan and ancient beauty Wang Zhaojun.

It also boasts the Gezhou Dam, the first of its kind built along the main channel of the Yangtze River, and the Three Gorges power plant, the world's largest hydropower project. These two projects have given Yichang once-in-a-lifetime development opportunities.
Yichang serves as the starting point of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, having 232 kilometers of watercourses and 536 km of shoreline.

To better protect its ecology, the city has 183 rivers and 11 lakes covered by a management system with four levels, municipal, county, township and village. A "river chief" and "lake chief" system was rolled out to assign each waterway a specific steward in charge of preventing pollution.

It has also closed, relocated and upgraded 134 chemical companies, shut down 216 illegal piers and closed 26 sewage outlets along the Yangtze River.

Moreover, 71 operational piers and 12 anchorages in the city have been equipped with clean energy supply systems to realize zero emissions, zero oil consumption and zero noise from the ships docking there.
In Yichang, about 400,000 primary and middle-school students take ecological civilization classes and thousands of residents have voluntarily picked up trash at the riverside for years.

These efforts have paid off. The city's forest coverage rate now stands at 65 percent, ranking first in the province. The populations of many endangered animals have grown in the past few years.
The number of Yangtze finless porpoises, for example, has increased to 17 from just three and flocks of Chinese merganser ducks have reappeared at a local national wetland park.

In 2018, Yichang received more than 77 million visits to its attractions from Chinese and foreign tourists, an increase of 16.9 percent year-on-year. It generated nearly 87 billion yuan ($12.42 billion) in tourism revenue, up 21.9 percent year-on-year, according to the local government.
