HONG KONG: The behaviour of Chinese tourists has again caused outrage after a series of photos emerged featuring holidaymakers posing on a boat while clutching a seagull.

Taken off the coast of Dalian, Liaoning province, on Monday, the photos show the tourists immobilising the bird by tightly gripping its head and legs.

A Dalian resident who was not part of the group took the photos and posted them on her Weibo account and they were quickly shared online, provoking angry comments, the Peninsula Morning Post reports.

The small group caught the seagull using bait while they were aboard the sightseeing vessel, according to the report.

Watching on, the woman who took the photos told the newspaper that she feared the tormented seagull’s wings could be broken because it was being held aloft in strong wind out at sea.

She later removed the photos from her Weibo account because she felt they had been shared too many times. The woman was quoted as saying that she felt relieved that others were as indignant about the incident as she was.

One online commenter described the tourists as “trash” and said they should feel ashamed of what they had done to the bird.

Another said the behaviour was typical of Chinese tourists. “They think they have prestige once they get rich. But [they don’t know] how uncivilised they are,” he said. “They don’t realise they’re being looked down on because of their bad behaviour.”

Another commenter said he hoped the authorities would hold the tourists accountable for their behaviour.
