 Presentation Abstract

Over the past decades, optical remote sensing and the satellite retrieved chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) have been widely used to estimate gross primary production at a global scale. However, both methods have their strengths and weaknesses. In this talk, I use a machine learning method and generate a new dataset that takes advantage of both optical remote sensing and satellite SIF retrievals. Using two case studies, I will show how this new dataset in combination with observations from eddy covariance (EC) flux tower and simulations from Earth system models (ESMs) can help us better understand the ecosystem carbon dynamics in late growing season. In the first study, I use an analytical framework and quantify the light limitation at northern high latitude for both spring and autumn. Combined with EC data, I show that regions with stronger/weaker light limitation will release/fix more carbon with autumn warming. This result reconciles the contradictory reports on the autumn warming effects on ecosystem carbon uptake by previous studies. In the second study, I explore the environmental limitation of late season photosynthesis at a global scale. I found contrasting spatial patterns of water and temperature limitation, the threshold to separate these regions are determined by mean annual temperature and pre-season soil moisture. Considering higher MAT predicted by ESMs, water limited area is projected to increase and cause stronger variations to the late season photosynthesis.
