Rd3 Rc3 35. Rbd4 {Black's isolated pawn on d6 is weak, but this surely can't be
enough to win, right?} 35... R8c4? {Exchanging rooks on d3 and then defending
with 36... Rc6 is suggested by Stockfish.} 36. Rxc4 Rxd3 37. Ra4 Rxh3 38. Rxa6
{Carlsen was able to punish the tiniest mistake, and now has an outside passed
pawn.} 38... g6 39. Kg2 Rd3 40. a4 Ra3 41. f3 Kg7 42. Kg3 Ra2 43. a5 Ra3 {All
Black can do is shuffle the rook back and forth in what should still be a drawn
rook and pawn ending.} 44. Ra8 Kf6 45. a6 Ke7 {Aronian has been defending
beautifully.} 46. a7 Ra2 47. f4 Ra3+ 48. Kf2 Kf6 49. Ke2 Kg7 50. Kd2 h5 {Aronian
continues to play correctly, creating an outside passed pawn of his own.} 51. g5
h4? {This seemingly logical move is an error. Black should keep his patience and
move the rook on the a-file. Now, the passed pawn on h4 can become a target
itself! This tiny mistake is all it takes for Carlsen to turn a draw into a
win.} 52. Ke2 {Carlsen hurries his king over towards the h-pawn.} 52... h3 53.
Kf2 Ra2+ 54. Kg1 Rg2+ 55. Kh1 Ra2 56. f5 {It is amazing but Black is almost
already in Zugzwang.} 56... Kh7 {Black is running out of moves!} 57. f6 h2 58.
Rf8! {Carlsen gives up his advanced passed pawn, as the black king is in a bind
and the winning plan is clear: walk the king to the d5-square and win either the
d6-pawn or f7-pawn (or both).} 58... Rxa7 59. Kxh2 Rb7 60. Kg3 Ra7 61. Kf4 Rb7
62. Ke3 Ra7 63. Kd4 Rc7 64. Re8 Ra7 65. Kd5 Ra5+ 66. Kxd6 Ra6+ 67. Ke7 Ra7+ 68.
Kf8 {Carlsen won this game by taking advantage of an almost invisible error. He
created a bind out of thin air and capitalized.} 1-0
