Jorende

Black's defense of b5.} 15... Qd6 16. Ng4 Qc5 {Most likely Topalov was worried
about e5 coming with an attack on the queen and White establishing a passed pawn
on d6. However, it's not clear if Black has much to fear there.} (16... N8a6 17.
e5 Qd8 18. d6 Nc5 {leads to a complicated position with chances for both
sides.}) 17. Ne3 {Impressively, Anand was still in his team's preparation here.}
17... N8a6 $6 {Developing makes sense, but the knight ends up poorly placed on
the edge of the board.} (17... Ra7 $1 18. dxc6 bxa4 19. Naxc4 Bxc6 $11) 18. dxc6
bxa4 (18... Bxc6 19. axb5 Bxb5 20. Naxc4 $1 Bxc4 21. Rac1 {Gives White a slight
edge.}) 19. Naxc4 Bxc6 20. Rac1 {White is fully mobilized and Black's extra
doubled pawn isn't a major factor. Even so, Black has no serious weaknesses and
good chances to hold the balance until his next move.} 20... h6 $2 {This modest
pawn move gives Anand the target he needs to start a powerful attack.} (20...
Qe7 $1 21. Nxa5 Bb5 {keeps the game close to equal.}) 21. Nd6 {A great square
for the knight! White's pieces are much better centralized.} 21... Qa7 $6 {Black
still has an extra pawn, but almost all of his pieces are on the queenside, so
Anand prepares a direct kingside attack.} (21... Qg5 {is the best try, bringing
a defender to the kingside.} 22. h4 Qe7 23. Nec4 $14) 22. Ng4 Rad8 {This allows
a strong sacrifice, but it's hard to suggest anything better.} (22... h5 23. Ne5
{Was Anand's idea, although 23.Nf6+! may be even stronger.} (23. Nf6+ gxf6 24.
e5 Bxg2 25. exf6 {And Black can't stop checkmate.})) 23. Nxh6+ $1 {\"I thought
that was clinching it,\" Anand said after the game.} 23... gxh6 24. Qxh6
{Black's king is simply too exposed. The immediate threat is e5 and Rc4-g4.}
24... f6 25. e5 $1 Bxg2 26. exf6 {Black's two extra pieces are helpless to
defend the king.} 26... Rxd6 {Black must give back material, but it only delays
the inevitable.} (26... Be4 27. Qg5+ Kh8 28. f7 {will soon be checkmate.})
(26... Bd5 27. Qg6+ Kh8 28. Rd4 Qxd4 29. Qg7#) 27. Rxd6 Be4 (27... Bd5 28. Rc4
$3 {A brilliant decoy!} 28... Bxc4 29. Rd4 {was a pretty variation that Anand
spotted at the board. Black can't capture on d4 because of mate on g7 and Rg4+
will soon lead to another mate.}) 28. Rxe6 Nd3 29. Rc2 Qh7 30. f7+ Qxf7 31. Rxe4
{White recoups the rest of his sacrificed material and threatens Rg4+.} 31...
Qf5 32. Re7 {Black resigns. There's no way to delay mate by more than a few
moves. This win gave Anand his first lead in the match, which he eventually won
by one point.} 1-0
