The Art Journey of The House Collective
——
(Katja Loher),
Katja
The House Collective’s 2019 Art Programme, ‘Encounters Across Cultures: Seeds of Life’ features Swiss-born multidisciplinary artist Katja Loher. Traveling to each of the four Houses, Katja created installations that were unique to each House, with one unifying concept of the Chinese five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Throughout the art installations, she incorporates different elements of dance, costume, art, design and music into her specially curated video sculptures. The Seeds of Life art journey began earlier this year in March at The Opposite House in Beijing, landing in Hong Kong at The Upper House in May then at The Middle House in Shanghai and has now finally arrived in Chengdu at The Temple House for its grand finale.
Katja
As this year’s feature artist for ‘Encounters Across Cultures’, Katja immersed herself in each of the cities, exploring the Houses’ distinct character and connecting with locally based artists to bring both local and global cultures into her art.
In Beijing, she connected with local contemporary artists and choreographers to create ‘Videoplanets’ of the Five Elements that floated in the atrium of The Opposite House.
Thierry Chow,
With modernity and tradition present in almost every corner in Hong Kong, Katja collaborated with Feng Shui designer Thierry Chow to create an immersive upward journey through The Upper House where positive energy (qi) flows freely.
In Shanghai, Katja collaborated with emerging street fashion brand, Dirty Pineapple, to bring the art and fashion world together.
Currently on display at The Temple House in Chengdu is the final chapter of ‘Encounters Across Cultures: Seeds of Life’. Two Chinese traditional masters, Wu Hao and Ma Yong, partner with Katja to incorporate the art of Chinese ink painting and tea ceremony into her video art.
The art celebrates not only the distinctive personality and style of each House, but also the universal connections across different cultures.
Clarissa
Clarissa Tam, the brain behind The House Collective’s art programme ‘Encounters Across Cultures’, describes art as one of Swire Hotels’ passions and how it contributes to creating inspiring guest experiences.
“Art is fundamentally about human experiences. That’s what I really love about art – that it can connect you with someone you’ve never met before or someone coming from a different background and a different point of view. That’s why we developed an art programme for The House Collective, to create a destination for our guests to connect and immerse in an experiential art experience.”
“We invited an artist to collaborate with the four Houses to meet new people and be inspired. Art itself is a gift, so being able to develop the art programme has been an experience of creating that ‘gift’.”
From seeing firsthand the artists’ creative process unfold and become something entirely new, Clarissa gained a valuable experience through her involvement with the programme. Her most memorable moment was when she saw the dancers dressed in silver onesies dancing on the Great Wall for Katja’s video art.
Katja
Seeds of Life is not only an art journey for the Houses but also a unique journey for Katja. As an innovative multidisciplinary artist who has brought 2D video art to life through her development of “video sculptures”, she has not only enjoyed her collaboration with The House Collection, but has been inspired by her encounters with the local artists, creating pieces that reflect the distinct environment of each city.
Katja
Katja states that it was challenging at times to create her video projections as she needed to adapt each installation to the physical environment and design of each House.
For The Middle House’s installation in Shanghai, she collaborated with a fashion brand and brought her art to clothing fabric for the first time. Together with street fashion brand, Dirty Pineapple, Katja created a limited-edition capsule collection featuring her art printed onto fashion pieces of the brand’s signature styles.
She also experimented with glass drawings and had the wood element projected onto the front door of The Middle House, bringing the layered effect to life.
Katja
Bringing a refreshing aspect to the art experience, Katja used the swimming pool as her canvas, projecting her video art onto the bottom of the pool and creating “floating art”.
For Seeds of Life’s last stop at The Temple House in Chengdu, Katja features crystals for the first time to create a simple yet dreamy and sparkly effect.
Although Seeds of Life is coming to a close, it is not the end of ‘Encounters Across Cultures’. Stay tuned as we introduce a new series of ‘Encounters Across Cultures’ next year. Art lives on at The House Collective.
