Editor's Note

Shadi Aldabergenov is a freshman in the School of Life Sciences from Kazakhstan. He not only loves life sciences, but also has a great passion for sports such as powerlifting and American football. This is a day in his life at Tsinghua.

“By understanding them (nature and life sciences), I feel like I understand my life in a deeper, more profound way.”

Motivated by his interests in nature and life sciences, Shadi came to Tsinghua to pursue his dream. As a freshman, he is adapting to university life.

“She taught me eye-opening things that helped me to reach where I am today.”

Shadi’s mother, who is an alumna of the School of Public Policy and Management, is Shadi’s role model. Her fearless spirit is Shadi's endless source of inspiration.

“The moment you will learn to be patient and control yourself, you will start to succeed and become stronger.”

Each week, Shadi undergoes training for powerlifting according to a precise training plan. Through powerlifting, Shadi has developed patience and self-control. It also helped him overcome the challenges of entering a completely new cultural environment.

“The phrase ‘No Sports, No Tsinghua’ fits me perfectly.”

After the training for powerlifting, Shadi is off to participate in the pull-up event of the Tsinghua sports competition. Although pull-up is not his strength, he still wanted to challenge himself.

Shadi then goes to training for the Tsinghua America football team. He has made rich friendships in the team.

“Sports is something that I can’t imagine my life without.”

In almost four years of competitive sports career, Shadi had won the Asian championships. Honors aside, sport has helped him understand his body, what it means to perform and live the spirit of never giving up.

Here comes the end of Shadi’s day at Tsinghua but his journey at Tsinghua has just begun. He will continue his pursuit of life science knowledge and sports. He will never give up and get up again and again, just like what competitive sports have taught him.
