Young Chinese venture overseas to boost connectivity

Forty-five student social practice teams from China visited 27 countries during the winter vacation this year for international exchange activities with other young people, aiming to facilitate people-to-people connectivity.

Organized by Tsinghua University, 697 students and faculty members engaged in face-to-face dialogues with young people around the world to discuss topics of global concern, the university said.

On Jan 28, the China-Malaysia Youth Exchange Forum was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, gathering over 40 Chinese and Malaysian youth representatives.

Wang Rui, secretary of the Youth League Committee of Tsinghua University, said as 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia, face-to-face exchanges between the two countries' young people are timely and important.

Tsinghua University hopes to deepen cooperation with Malaysian universities and research institutions to play an active role in promoting educational development, Wang said during the forum's opening ceremony.

Xing Yunxi from Tsinghua University and Chiang Kai Lin from the University Tunku Abdul Rahman in Malaysia delivered speeches on the theme of international communication and cultural exchange in the new media age.

Wang Zhongyu, a student from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at Tsinghua University, said young people should bravely express their views on the international public opinion stage. "This is not only a right granted by the new media era, but also a responsibility," she said.

Last month, student overseas social practice teams also went to Milan, in Italy, and Latin America to talk to other young people.

The 2024 Milan Academic Week of the China-Italy Design Innovation Hub at Tsinghua University concluded on Jan 25. Youth representatives engaged in in-depth discussions on cultural exchanges in fields such as economic management and architecture, reflecting on the ideas of the Renaissance period and seeking sustainable development solutions, the university said.

Renzo Burotto, a graduate student at the University of Chile, said his first impression of China was its rich historical and cultural heritage. After interacting with Tsinghua students, he deepened his interest in modern Chinese history and affirmed his desire to pursue further studies in China.

Carla Martin, a graduate from the National University of Lanus in Argentina, said Chinese television dramas and animated shows were important ways for Argentine youth to understand China, and her understanding and fondness for Chinese history came from Chinese historical TV dramas such as Love Like the Galaxy and Love Between Fairy and Devil.
