Editor's note:

In this feature, we continue our exploration of Tsinghua University's diverse academic landscape through the “Meet the Deans” series. Exploring the advanced research focus, rich history, international collaborations, and future developments, each department at Tsinghua shines with its own vibrancy.

Today, let's join Professor Zhou Qing'an,  the Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication, to explore the "Tsing Xin" campus and learn more about this School.

Established in 2002, the School of Journalism and Communication is a relatively young but vibrant part of Tsinghua University. Originally, the Department of Communication was founded in 1998 under the School of Humanities. Now, the School is home to a dynamic and international community, often referred to as Tsing Xin.

Academic Excellence

Ranked first in media studies in Chinese Mainland by QS and Times University ranking, the School boasts over 500 international alumni from more than 72 countries. This global perspective is fundamental to its identity, fostering a unique blend of academic rigor and internationalism.

The media landscape has evolved significantly with the advent of artificial intelligence, presenting new challenges and opportunities for journalists. The School is at the forefront of this transformation, preparing students to navigate and excel in this new era. The curriculum includes five major disciplines, designed to cultivate compelling storytellers with an international outlook.

Global Reach

The faculty at the School is a blend of prominent Chinese experts and distinguished international scholars. The School offers a range of classes from communication theory to journalism practice, including over 30 courses conducted entirely in English.

The School offers three international master’s programs and has strategic partnerships with over 30 international institutions. Notably, the Tsinghua-USC dual master’s program in communication and data science is a pioneering initiative combining data science with journalism.

Research and Development

The School hosts over 16 research centers, many of which are interdisciplinary, fostering a robust environment for innovative research. Unique initiatives like the "Da Peng Che" Mobile Classroom and the Global Competence Course emphasize a global approach to education.

Students at Tsing Xin enjoy a balance of academic and extracurricular activities. From real-world journalism practice to visits to companies like Baidu and ByteDance, the School ensures students gain practical experience. International students, in particular, find a unique opportunity to refine their skills and produce high-quality work.

Tsing Xin celebrates a variety of cultural events, including the Mid-Autumn Festival, Chinese New Year, and movie nights. Students are active in numerous clubs and societies, from the THU Comedy Club to the school’s dance troupe, ensuring a vibrant campus life.

Dean Zhou Qing'an extends a warm invitation: “In a span of 22 years, we've had 2,951 graduates. All of our students create their own stories here, and together they weave the story of Tsing Xin. We welcome you to join us to create your own stories here.”

Stay tuned for the “Meet the Deans” video series, where you can explore more schools and departments of Tsinghua University together!
