Mark Zuckerberg has urged Facebook users to practice "social distancing" and use Facebook to stay connected with others during the coronavirus pandemic in a video live stream.

In a virtual "fireside chat" on his personal Facebook page, the tech mogul said that social networks were particularly important for people under isolation, and advocated people across the world working from home in order to slow the spread of the virus.

He described the purpose of the live stream as to spread accurate information about Covid-19, answer users' worries about the disease and explain the measures that Facebook is taking to help contain it.

Much of the discussion was taken up by touting the research efforts of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a charitable foundation that Mr Zuckerberg runs together with his wife, the paediatrician Dr Priscilla Chan.

Mr Zuckerberg said: "Part of the way to slow down the spread of the virus is just to make sure that you're not congregating with groups of 50 or 100 people all at once, where you don't know if they've been exposed to it before.

He said: "A lot of people are working from home or in smaller areas, or either quarantining and distancing themselves. At times like that, people can get very lonely, and we see that the use of the internet services like the ones that we provide...dramatically during times of crisis like this.

"That's when people really want to know that they can be connected to people they care about, and execute this kind of social distancing in a way where you don't feel isolated from the people around you. We're very focused on making sure that we can continue to provide those services reliably and safely."

The video, which was watched by around 517,000 people, saw Mr Zuckerberg quizzing Dr Chan and Dr Joe DeRisi, a biochemist whose research into infectious diseases is funded by the couple's philanthropy, about how users could best fight the spread of Covid-19 in their daily lives.

Dr Chan said: "The message we want everyone to walk away from this is that... each one of us can actually contribute to bringing down the peak of  coronavirus, flattening the peak and social distancing... that's a responsibility each one of us has to take care of our broader community."

Dr DeRisi described how Covid-19 may be able to stay active on surfaces for up to a day, and said that the key advantage of wearing a surgical mask is that it prevents the wearer from touching their face. Dr Chan added that the virus is unlikely to spread through mere breathing, as opposed to sneezes and coughs.

Mr Zuckerberg also described Facebook's crackdown on Covid-19 misinformation, explaining why the company has been willing to outright delete hoax cures and false health advice en masse when it has so long refused to do the same to other kinds of fake news.

"We're taking a pretty hard line," he said. "The basic principle we have is that we don't want content in our system that's going to put people in imminent danger... we draw a distinction between content [based on] whether it's going to incite violence or promote terrorism.

"A lot of health misinformation fits into [that] category... people are spreading hoaxes that are encouraging people to not seek treatment if they have certain symptoms, or are promoting false cures, some of which might prevent people from getting a real cure, and some of which themselves are dangerous.

"That's the kind of content that we're going to go out of our way to make sure that we take down."

He added that Facebook feels more confident deleting disease misinformation because there is broad consensus among public health experts as to what is true and false, whereas similar questions in politics are hotly disputed.

The company has adjusted its algorithms to avoid recommending false information and groups that spread false information, as well as giving unlimited free advertising to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other international health organisations.
