Unit 4 I used to be afraid of the dark.

Section A

1b  Listen. Bob is seeing some friends for the first time in four years. What did his friends use to look like?

Conversation 1

Bob: Mario, is that you?

Mario: Yeah, it is. It’s Bob! Hey guys, it’s Bob! I haven’t seen you for four years!

Bob: Yeah. I’m here with my parents. We’re visiting for a couple of days. Wow, Mario, you look different! You used to be short, didn’t you?

Mario: Yes, I did. Now I’m tall. And so are you!

Bob: That’s true. And you used to wear glasses.

Conversation 2

Bob: Hey, Amy, it’s great to see you.

Amy: Hi, Bob. How are you?

Bob: Fine. Wow, you’ve changed!

Amy: Really? How?

Bob: You used to have short hair.

Amy: You remember that? Yes, I did.

Bob: And you used to be really tall!

Amy: Not anymore. You’re taller than me now, Bob.

Conversation 3

Tina: Hiya, Bob.

Bob: Hi, Tina. You’ve changed, too.

Tina: Oh, yeah?

Bob: You have blonde hair!

Tina: Yeah, it used to be red, didn’t it?

Bob: And it’s straight!

Tina: Yeah, it used to be curly.

2a  Listen and check (√) the words you hear.

Paula: Hey, Steve! Over here! Don’t you remember me?

Steve: Oh, wow! You’re Paula, aren’t you?

Paula: That’s right. We were in the same science class during Grade 8.

Steve: Yes, now I remember. You used to be really quiet, didn’t you? I remember you were always silent in class.

Paula: Yeah. I wasn’t very outgoing.I was never brave enough to ask the teachers any questions!

Steve: Well, but you were always friendly. And you got a better grade in science than I did,haha. And I remember you were really good in music class, too. Wait a minute! Did you use to play the piano?

Paula: Yes, I did. But now I’m more interested in sports. I play soccer almost every day, and I’m on a swim team. But I still play the piano from time to time.

Steve: Wow, you’re so active! People sure change.

From Shy Girl to Pop Star  从害羞的女孩到流行歌星

1   For this month’s Young World magazine, I interviewed 19-year-old Asian pop star Candy Wang.  1   在本月的《青年世界》杂志中,我采访了19岁的亚洲流行歌明星肯蒂王。

Candy told me that she used to be really shy and took up singing to deal with her shyness.  肯蒂告诉我,她曾经非常害羞,所有她从事唱歌来应对自己的羞怯。

She explained that there are many good things, like being able to travel and meet new people  all the time.  她解释说,有很多好处,比如可以总是去旅游,结交新的朋友。

“I didn’t use to be popular in school, but now I get tons of at ention  everywhere I go.”  “过去,我在学校不怎么受欢迎,但现在无论我走到哪里,我都是万众瞩目的。

However, too much attention can also be a bad thing.  然而,过多的关注也不是一件多好的事情。

“I always have to worry about how I appear to others and I have to be very careful about what I say or do.  “我一直担心我在别人看来表现如何,我必须非常小心我说的或做的一切。

And I don’t have much private time anymore.  另外,我没有太多的私人时间了。

3   What does Candy have to say to all those young people  who want to become famous?  肯蒂对所有那些想出名的年经人要说什么呢?

“Well,” she begins slowly, “you have to be prepared to give up your normal life.  “嗯,”她慢慢地开始说,“你必须准备好要放弃你的正常生活。

You can never imagine how difficult the road to success is.  你永远无法想象成功的道路是多么的困难。

Many times I thought about giving up, but I fought on.  很多次我想放弃,但是我都坚持住了。

Li Wen is a normal 15-year-old boy who  works hard in school and gets good grades.  李文是一个很平常的15岁的男孩,他在学校努力学习并获得了好成绩。

It is hard to believe that he used to be a “problem child” until a conversation with his parents influenced his way of thinking.  很难相信他曾经是一个“问题孩子”,直到一次与父母的谈话影响了他的思维方式。

Li Wen lives in the Sichuan countryside.  李文生活在四川农村。

As a small child, he seldom gave his parents any problems, and they were proud of him.  小的时候,他很少给父母带来麻烦,父母都为他感到骄傲。

He studied, ate and slept at the school, and he hated it.  他的学习,吃饭和睡觉都在学校。他讨厌这种生活。

There were so many rules, and he used to keep breaking them.  学校有很多规定,他常常不遵守学校的规定。

One day, he told his teacher he wanted to leave the school.                 .  有一天,他告诉他的老师他想离开学校。

The head teacher advised his parents to talk with their son in person.  校长建议他的父母当面跟他们的儿子进行谈话。

His parents  took a 40-hour train ride and a five-hour bus ride to go back to their hometown.  他的父母做了40个小时的火车,还有5个小时的汽车赶回了家乡。

To Li Wen’s surprise, their conversation changed his life.  让李文的惊讶的是,他们之间的谈话改变了他的生活。

“It was exactly what I needed,” he said. “My parents helped me to understand how much they had given me.  “这正是我需要的,”他说。“我的父母帮助我认识到他们给予了我如此之多。

They also told me that even though they couldn’t be there to take care of me,  他们还告诉我,尽管他们无法照顾我,

they were always thinking of me and would take pride in everything good that I  did._____ .  他们总是想着我,为我做的每件好事都感到自豪。_____。

I realized that since my parents moved away, I’ve been afraid of being alone, and have tried to make my  parents pay more attention to me.”  我意识到自从我父母搬走之后,我一直害怕孤独,试图让父母更多地注意我。

“It’s very important for parents to be there for their children,” Li Wen says.  “父母对于孩子来说,是什么重要的,”李文说。
