美国SAT 中的作文题目都是认认真真的议论题,没有缠人思维的“肉豆须”之类的神题。
最近,中国在高考的时候,美国也在举行“高考”。此“高考”跟中国的高考不可同日而语。美国“高考”叫SAT(Scholastic Assessment Test),即学术评定测试的成绩。考数学、批评性阅读和写作(math,critical reading,and writing)。
根据SAT的组织者——美国大学理事会 (College Board)的观点,SAT主要是考察学生们在大学阶段所必需的阅读和写作能力。不过,在2016年改革后的新SAT中,总分共1600分,分为阅读、文法和数学三部分,写作改为选考。
SAT考试时间在每年三月、五月、六月、十月、十一月和十二月的第一个星期六以及一月的最后一个周六举行。其中,每年三月的考试仅在美国举行。考试时间上午8点开始,大约到下午1点结束(各个考点休息时间不同,故时间有差异)。
一共考3个小时,一年有7次考试,随你考,考到你满意为止。而且,SAT只作为大学录取的参考标准之一。美国大学录取新生综合考虑几个方面:高中成绩、课外活动、义工服务、申请文章、老师推荐等。有的大学甚至都不要求考SAT。因从未听闻“一分定终生”,所以,美国的“高考”不会像莫言陪女儿高考的文章中所感慨的那样,“唉,这高考竟然像日本鬼子一样可怕了。”

美国作文考题的格式是:先给一段提示(Prompt),再给个题目(Assignment),要求“用你从阅读、学习、经历或观察所得的例子来论证你的观点。”( Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.)
历年来的作文考题内容包括文学、艺术、运动、政治、技术、科学、历史及时事等,但都不需要考生具备专业背景知识。主要考学生的说理能力,即摆出观点并用各种具体论证手段加以支持分析的能力。这是将自己的思维用文字有条理地清晰地表述出来的能力,是大学学习必需的能力。
SAT作文不是考言语能力,所以略有语法、用词错误是无伤大雅的。只要不写“靠、日、操”,“神马浮云”都可写。弄得不巧,还能因为与时俱进、用词生动而加分。
SAT作文不是考政治思想,所以任何题目都没有“正确”答案。判卷老师不会去寻找正确的观点(The essay readers are not looking for one correct viewpoint)。对所给观点,你可以赞同“保持一致”,也可以完全唱反调,不会因为你“不保持一致”而给零分。
对SAT作文,美国各大学态度不一。有的根本不看作文分数。有的则用学生的作文成绩来对照其申请文章,因为SAT作文是当场写作的,可以检测实际水平。SAT作文是当场写作的,而申请文章是在家里写的,可以“精雕细刻”,可以让有水平的大人“润色”甚至“捉刀”。若申请文章水平明显高于SAT作文,大学的审查人员会在该学生的申请材料上加注“DDI”,即“爹爹写的”(Daddy Did It)。

提示:在任何良好的对话中成为中心,不是看你的嗓子是否比别人大,而是看你能否静听不同的观点。倾听他人的观点,特别是那些你不同意的观点,总是能让你获知更多。花尽可能多的时间去倾听别人必须一吐为快的意见,即使你很是确定自己的立场。了解和尊重他人的立场,是说服人们接受你的立场的第一步。
作文题 :在你试图说服他人时,“听”是否比“说”更为重要?
提示:忠诚,几乎是我们跟朋友与所爱的人的关系的基础,但我们的忠诚总是无望地纠结、妥协。尽管我们想要为真实信守忠诚,但我们永远无法逃脱对立的忠诚造成的冲突的要求。我们具有的的忠诚对不同的人们来说可能是相抵触的;我们对家庭的忠诚与我们对朋友的忠诚可能是相抵触的;我们的个人间的忠诚可能跟爱国职责是难以融合的。
提示:人们注重实用的教育、能赚钱的工作和有用的产品。他们常常抛弃他们觉得不现实的或不能即刻见效的想法和项目。确实,实用性能带来物质的回报,然而,尽管如此,不讲实用性可能从其他途径使人富足。而且,现今的实用产品和活动可能很快过时,而那些现在看来不现实的东西可能有朝一日证明是很有价值的。
