J.K.K. Apartment was constructed in 1935 and is one of the outstanding historical buildings in the core of Shanghai's most culturally diverse district.

When we first arrived at J.K.K. Apartment, we were attracted by the modern and streamlined decorations on its facade: soft lines that looked very romantic in contrast to its surroundings. When presented with the opportunityto design the interior of this apartment, we did not hesitate to use the stripes on the building’s facade and escalator interior as the main design element and introduce them into the interior space as a continuation of the romantic experience. It also allows for the unification of the interior and exterior on an architectural and symbolic level.

As the original structure of the space was torn down and explored further, the exposed orange roof beams became a new body of space for the owner. Using this as inspiration, we wanted to preserve more of the existing texture of the space. On the one hand,it is the new design possibilities offered by its site ethos, on the other hand, they echo our long-standing advocacy of sustainability and our affinity for 'traces of time'. This way, the coarse and rich tone of the flat is released.

The sunken sitting area in the apartment, like a moon in water, is the axis of the story that vertically echoes the heavy orange steel beams above. It also acts as a central axis through the balcony, living room, bedroom and courtyard spaces. Its symmetrical space layout with an overall classical and subdued colour palette, custom-made russet doors, concrete fireplace, antique wood, marble furniture and deliberately preserved concrete walls create a primitive, mystical and ritualistic space.

Interms of the division of functions, we have divided the first floor into a social space and a private area. The social space is constructed as a transparent and flexible open space. The long dining table in the living room is a good place to workand hold meetings. This space meets the functional requirements of contemporary urbanites, and it has the best natural sunlightin the apartment and changes in natural light can be felt. The sunken sitting area serves as the central axis of this space. It divides the entire space into four sections so that this ‘wrapped’ and free environment can be entered from any direction.

In contrast to the open kitchen and living room, the private areas are more like an artistic multi-purpose box, showcasing the layers of connections within the range from the bedroom to the courtyard and beyond.

The design of the second floor breaks the narrative of the horizontal dimension of the apartment with a low-saturation mix of colours and modern decorative choices – bringing a lighter atmosphere to the space that is distinct from the first floor.

The open skylight design of the second-floor loft brings in plenty of light while extending one's view to the outer city and nature. With a relaxing colour palette, it serves as a comfortable retreat.
