Story:Simplified Chinese - JianTiZi 简体字
No one can control the set of characters that people actually write with. So when the Communist Chinese in 1956 decided to tell people how to simplify there language, at first they could only offer some general rules. By the 1980s we have the advent of two computerized character sets that by default are supposed to represent Simplified and Traditional characters.
In modern Chinese the literate adult uses fuzzy number of about 5000 characters that correspond to single syllable Mandarin words. These characters can be used to form about 60,000 multi syllable Mandarin words used by modern native speakers.

qì气:productive phonetic, air /vapor / spirit / temper / feeling /

fēng风:Primitive pictograph 风風. Originally a sail 凡 and a flying insect 【chóng】虫 indicating wind.

xuǔ雪:From rain 雨 and hand 彐. Meaning snow that can be wiped away.
léi雷:From rain 雨 and field 田. Meaning thunder, see 電
diàn电:Deletion remnant 电(電). From rain 雨 and lightning 电. Meaning lightning.
rè热:From fire 灬火 and phonetic 执埶. Meaning hot
lěng冷:From ice 冫and phonetic 令. Meaning cold.
