Eva Zhang Yi

Eva Zhang Yi, born in 1989 in Chengdu, China. currently lives and works in Shanghai and Chengdu. Zhang received a master’s degree in Economics from University of Southern California and a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from University of Minnesota. Before foraying into art, Zhang had worked in the finance industry in New York and Hong Kong. Her works were closely related to the work and life experiences as a woman. Zhang taught herself sewing and fabric manipulation techniques. In her solo show in Tabula Rasa Gallery, she has presented a series of fabric works using a variety of methods such as tie-dye and collage. Zhang attunes to the shaping of women in contemporary life as well as in historical texts. Zhang’s works unfold a re-imagination of these existing narratives. She recently focuses on the symbiosis relationship between humans and pets. Because of the pandemic as well as the influence of social media, people are putting on more social properties to their pets. However, part of them can hardly fulfil the obligation as responsible pet parents. Pets are more embellished as objects or accessories. Artist has reflected the question of the imbalance between the expectation on pets and the actual payout of humans on her work.
