Sophie Vallance Cantor
Sophie Vallance Cantor was born in 1993 in Stirling, Scotland. She graduated from Camberwell College of Arts with a Bachelor degree in 2015. She currently lives and works in Glasgow and London. Cantor blends elements of reality and fantasy in her dazzling large-scale paintings that draw on everyday life encounters. She shares a deep interest in folklore and storytelling; by combining the narrative with personal experience, the artist produces vibrant depictions of loved ones, animals, food and deconstructed surroundings. Influenced by the artistic style of POP Art, various characters in her paintings are cartoon-looking with bright and groovy colours. Through the exploration of topics such as personal history, humorous narratives, gender and appearance anxiety, the cathartic creative process revolves around an intense examination of life and an inner reflection of a state of mind. Cantor has lived in different areas in Europe, allowing her practice to naturally evolve through time and locale, tied not to a particular geographical place but instead to the experiential and how it takes on shape and distinction in hindsight.
