第一次听到 Maria 的 EP Devil's Rain (2021) 以及 2 月发布的首支单曲 The Only Thing 的时候，不那么立体的、揉合环境录音的、空灵的弹唱风格，立刻让我想起 Grouper。不过，他们其实也没有那么相似：Maria 永远以电吉他指弹为创作核心，很少用大空间或高扩散的混响，电琴中低频传播后的声音不会太过空灵，Grouper 则是反过来的。
Their classically-trained mezzo-soprano voice soars over raw, etherial guitars; audio samples from Prospect Park – now almost unrecognizable - settle alongside tender, transformative harmonies. Mixing together different sessions, tracks recorded directly into their phone and samples collected over the years, Maria BC likens Hyaline to a “sonic collage.” It’s a project of patience and trusting the process.

特别喜欢 The Only Thing 多处不露痕迹的调式切换（让有 cover 计划的我扒曲子有点累），也因此，简单纯粹的织体、隐晦的歌词就足以将复杂的情绪传达至听者。Hyaline 主要的音轨都被中置，作为点缀的、侧面的和声和环境录音更加突出收紧的 mono 声场，类似我同样喜欢的 You'll Never Get to Heaven。留意到如 The Big Train 吉他的 delay 是发送到一左一右两侧，Rerun 和声隐约有 St. Vincent 的痕迹。
Maria 通过厂牌 Father/Daughter Records 发布了 takeover playlist，介绍影响了他们的音乐人。我在等待 Rough Trade 上架 Sky Blue LP+，发现他们的介绍中直接写出了 “For fans of Cocteau Twins（我：not really... 虽然 Maria 有提及受 Liz Fraser 影响，尤其是 The Only Thing 这首歌）, Grouper and Dreampop”。

我喜爱的 Yoga 音乐制作人（不）Grotta Veterano 及其厂牌 ROHS! 作品的视觉设计一直很精美，这张 Dutch Boy Paint 封面的枯山水景色被分为两部分 —— 收到 CD 后才发现背面即照片的右侧（感谢 Drønevil），写在留白上的衬线小字也很古典精致。至于为什么选择日本园林作为封面，Veterano 也有开玩笑般提到，这首 46 分钟的曲子 “can be briefly described as Japanese music played by an amateur orchestra of toy musicians”。
“Dear friends, as I wrote a few months ago in an email to Andrea, this album that you are going to listen to, is a single longform piece, and basically it can be briefly described as Japanese music played by an amateur orchestra of toy musicians. Sometimes these instrumentalists get the wrong note, get jammed, play notes that are too short or too long, and then resume their own way within the composition. Small and short events occur throughout the piece, sporadically and spontaneously. It takes a lot of patience, and perhaps a certain amount of distraction, to let this music flow in the air. A can of Dutch Boy Paint, consisting of basic lead carbonate and linseed oil.”

在 Peterborough/Leeds 这支 3 人乐队中，Pollyanna Holland-Wing 既是主唱也是唯一的吉他手，创作、演奏着如此高难度且不断迸发灵感的 math rock，凭借这张专辑就足以成为我心目中最名副其实的 frontwoman 与吉他手榜样。
其实 math rock 界的女性榜样还真不少：Yvette Young (Floral)、えみちょこ（宇宙コンビニ）、中嶋イッキュウ（tricot）、キダモティフォ（tricot）、ヒロミ・ヒロヒロ（tricot）、张凯婷（大象体操）、佳虹（右侧合流）……

是这个月最想分享给朋友的音乐。
The music guides a certain experience of the world around. In claire’s music there is this marriage—not just a pairing or juxtaposition but an interrelationship, an eventual confusion—of song/texture, narrative/abstraction, figure/ground. Everything comes from somewhere in particular but not just the voices, the field recordings, the what is being said or meant, what matters is “the where you are now.” There are so many ways of anchoring oneself in the present, some have to do with fantasy or storytelling and some with accepting what is.

The Smile (Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Tom Skinner) 与制作人 Nigel Godrich 完全致力于达到音色的 state of the art，节奏与和弦仍然玩得非常丰富 —— 因此会让不少朋友联想到 Radiohead In Rainbows (2007) 或 The King Of Limbs (2011)，有太多值得聊的了。之后我会具体分析并撰写长文，敬请期待 :-D

Gospel 在首张专辑 The Moon Is a Dead World(2005) 发行 17 年后终于推出新专 The Loser。 progressive post-hardcore 足以概括 Gospel 的大致听感，这张新专辑更加 prog；首专的鼓和吉他声音录制得比较黏腻，而新专明显更清晰，动态更大。
在 The Loser 中，Gospel 延续上专较为复杂的调式，节奏编写保持 math-y，所有乐器与 Adam Dooling 的演唱严丝合缝。Jon Pastir 演奏的键盘呼应着 “Gospel” 队名，与 Dooling 贡献着严谨的吉他 riff 与少量 solo；Vinny Roseboom 的鼓常用镲，除了 blast beat 还有大量精彩的段落，与贝斯手 Sean Miller 支撑起丰富多变的律动。
由于 Dooling 的演唱方式，Gospel 常常被打上 “screamo” 标签，但 wisher 提到乐队并不这样认为。我也觉得 Gospel 的器乐并不接近 screamo 根源，新专辑更是。

同名曲 Where the Heart Is 从 4 小节单独的鼓组切入，紧跟着典型的 math rock 段落，两把吉他的交错配合（尤其在歌曲后半段）实在太棒了。这张专辑非常适合喜欢 2010s midwest emo & math rock 的朋友，吉他相当扎实耐听，有些更接近流行歌的想法加上 twinkle riff 也挺好听的。主唱 Zayna 的音色很特别。For fans of... FES! lol

慢速，阴暗氛围和封面一致。但主音吉他较少用失真，女声也很清亮优美，Thirsty Moore 的节奏有比较强烈的 post-punk 倾向，极偶尔地让我想起 Amesoeurs。大和弦 dream pop 曲目 Smoking and Safety 与 Side by Side 慵懒的鼓点和梦幻的氛围在专辑中与众不同。

来自日本的两支乐队通过本地独立厂牌 ungulates 发行了这张 Split EP，4 首歌都很不错。虽然封面很像是对第 5 波代表乐队之一 your arms are my cocoon 的致敬，在我听来他们是非常正统的 twinkly midwest emo。介绍中提及 “For fans of: Cap'n Jazz, Marietta, Forests; くるり, ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION, KOTORI”。

Elder Jack 为自己标了 “5th wave” 标签，但这张 DIY debut 完全没有拘泥于我对 5th wave 的典型印象。或许也可以这样理解，所谓的 “post-emo” 是继承着来自 emo 前辈的情绪、调弦、部分和弦或 screaming 唱法等等任何东西，但最终创作出了非常不同的声音。
单曲 Icehead 是对 Alex G 的 emo cover，刚发布时就让我注意到他们。SIW 如同爬格子练习，更加 math-y，位于高音区的人声旋律和唱法致敬着 American Football。Unacceptable 和 Dadderall 最能体现 midwestern dynamics 与 screamo 的感染力，SSRI Brain Zaps 则非常有亚洲风味（Asian Glow, 파란노을 Parannoul, Forests）。
Bandcamp 主页显示 Elder Jack 来自 Chicago，但这一信息似乎只是他们开的一个玩笑，4 位成员应该分别来自不同地区。贝斯手 Jacob West 同时是 YouTube channel c h point 与 launch point records 的创始人，他将部分 DIY 实体的收入捐给了慈善组织。

Astrel K 是 duo Ulrika Spacek 的成员，他在 Duophonic Super 45s 发布单曲 You Could If You Can 的时候就让我非常期待。部分鼓组与合成器像更 pop 的 Stereolab 个人计划 —— 这大概也是通过 Duophonic 发行的原因，尽管我并没有搜到 Astrel 和 Tim Gane 这些人的关系。

Recorded on Nov 25th 2021 in London ‘Drum Solo’ exhibits Sartorius’ collection of drums, percussion and augmented objects as the sole sound source expertly woven into intoxicating rhythmical formations by Sartorius’ idiosyncratic yet precise multi-layered style whilst Herbert uses only Julian’s sounds to transform the patterns into deep sonic landscapes in real-time.

UA 释出的几张 artwork 即给我一种都市丽人 J-Pop 感，聆听体验还是很 chill 的。特别喜欢中村佳穂（92 年出生）参与创作的 Honesty，编曲上的停顿和效果上的 reverse 把软音源用到最好，有让我想到 RADWIMPS 为「君の名は。」而作的 soundtrack。这样的写作思路，我可能只在霓虹流行音乐里听到过。Jeremy Quartus：混音师不要削我 bass。

这张 electro EP 由 Berlin 厂牌 Tresor Records 发行，DeFeKT 在创作中结合了确诊多发性硬化症（multiple sclerosis, MS）后的生活体验。
After receiving a diagnosis of MS in 2016 DeFeKT used music as the main coping mechanism to process the huge changes in his life. Of that time he says, “Music saved me. Every day, every hour it was my escape.”
Jensen Interceptor had first-hand knowledge of the effects of MS after a close family member was diagnosed, and so the two found common bonds that they used to inspire this collective project. This opened a deep well of creativity in the pair that resulted in 10 tracks made in a single week.
