May I know how many ISCAEE conference have you attend?

This is my first one. I'm really excited about it. It's been so much fun to be able to be with international contingency group of artists internationally. Nice to be able to talk to other people and to meet with them.

What do you feel about attending ISCAEE conference?

I think the clay community in the world is pretty awesome, to be able to come to Korea or go to America and be connected through clay, I love that. One friend of mine I went to graduate school with is here, so I'm traveling with three of my friends together. I haven't seen him in maybe like eighteen years. It's like a little reunion.

People here are really great to work with. It's nice to see when you step outside of your own country, outside of your own area or outside of your own clay world that it's nice to see what other people are doing in other parts of the world and recognize that it's very similar to what we might be doing in our parts of the world. We're not that far apart, we make similar stuff, we use similar technologies. It's nice to go all the way around the world and see people working, see students that are doing great things. My students are doing great things and to know that's happening elsewhere, too. It's pretty nice to see that and I think it makes the world a lot smaller. I try to teach that to my students when I  teaching at the university, even though none of my students came this trip but hopefully they come in the future. What I'm learning and experiencing here I can take back to America as well.

Do you have any expectation for the conference?

I wasn't sure what to expect. Because I really didn't know exactly how things are gonna be structured, how things are gonna go. I didn't have too many expectations and just come and enjoy myself and have a good time.

May I know how many ISCAEE conference have you attend?

I only attended three. The first one was 2011 Tokyo. There has been one in Turkey and one in China that I was unable to attend, but I was aware of what was going on.

What do you feel about attending ISCAEE conference?

I'm really pleased to be in Korea because I'm interested in things that are Korean. It's also the opportunity to see old friends and make new friends and colleagues in the field.

The scale of this ceramics program is remarkable. I 'm not sure what the proportion of international participants compared to Korean participants, especially the Dankook University participants. But it's a huge number of Koreans that are involved. And the fact that they have the facility that's able to accommodate this big group, and the museum collection was remarkable, as well as the participants, the work they do.

Do you have any expectation for the conference?

I had high expectations because Korea has such a long history of ceramics. It’s the opportunity to see some of that history and the way it's manifest also, I think in contemporary Korea, there is very interesting culture of design and lots of contemporary work that has a strong design element apart from the kind of historical things that are also existing at the same time. I was anxious to see those things. In fact, I have seen some and I want to see more.

I am very much interested in international exchange and the things that come out of exchange. I think that we're stronger when we have this kind of exchange. And I my favorite phrase is borrowed from agriculture where they talk about hybrid vigor. When you take two plants and cross them, the offspring is often stronger than their parents. I think that's true in culture as well. We look at all the ways that international interaction has advanced civilization. I think that if there has been any advance, it's because of that sort of thing. When we are isolated, when we are pursuing our own either personal or regional or national goals to the exclusion of the international ones, then the whole world is weaker for it. To the extent that we can have this kind of exchange. I think we're all better off.

May I know how many ISCAEE conference have you attend?

First one was in 2011, I spend a lot of time in Japan and have been a guest lecturer at Geidai in Tokyo. In 2011, Fumio Shimada invited me to have our college come to join the ISCAEE program. That was the first one. This is my fourth one.

What do you feel about attending ISCAEE conference?

That it’s wonderful. I’ve been in Korea before, but I’ve never been to Dankook University. It's been wonderful at the university and it’s pretty amazing. Everybody here has been wonderful.

Lots of things impressed me here, one thing is the amazing facilities, the set up for the studios is pretty extensive for the program. Also the friendliness of the staff and the support staff. And the school campus is beautiful.

Do you have any expectation for the conference?

Only those that come from past ISCAEE conferences in the sense that my expectation is that I will learn things, I will share things with others, and I will make new friends. That's the main reason to be here.

May I know how many ISCAEE conference have you attend?

This is my first one, and I heard about it five years ago. I’m very excited to be here because I love Korea, I also love international students. And in the United States, I have a lot of Chinese students and few students from other countries. So, I like teaching internationally also.

What do you feel about attending ISCAEE conference?

It's been amazing. I love the size of the conference, is a little smaller, but everybody's friendly. What I love about it is everybody has this sharing attitude about they're not just technology, but their ideas and their friendship as well. So it's really awesome. Korean people are very generous, and the students are generous. Actually, when I drove the bus, I met some people from Turkey and they were so kind and nice. Everybody is very open and nice. I think it makes our world a little smaller and closer when we have things like this, because we realize that we're all doing the same things.

Do you have any expectation for the conference?

I have a few expectations. I hope that I can make some international connections, maybe have an opportunity for some students to come to my school and my students go to different schools. I had two students come to the conference, my hope is that maybe in a couple of years, I can have like ten students come to the conference. I just want to make connections more than anything and get to know all these other amazing artists. Several of them I met in 2010 like professors from China, Professor Fumio Shimada and keep those relationships going.

I think that by doing these types of things, if you're in ceramics and getting to know the ceramics world, because United States is just a little part of ceramics. China is a big part of ceramic so is Korea. Getting to know those things, opens up your thinking. I think that's really awesome, help me to have thoughts and know what the world is doing and have friends as well.
