New Horizons: Qingdao
With its blend of architecture, cobbled streets, and hillside villas, Qingdao is a captivating city. It is also a major port and growing center of trade and manufacturing, home to many national and international brands. As a result, there is an increasing need for global legal talent to support these entities as they operate and expand.
Qingdao also is home to some of the finest law schools in Shandong province. Many students at these law schools recognize that they need to have an international legal education to participate in this growth and access these opportunities.
Against this background, Professor John Smagula made his first lecture trip to Qingdao last week. He spoke at China Ocean University on November 23 and Qingdao University law school on November 24, 2017.
Lecture in Qingdao University
“Qingdao has special meaning to me,” Professor Smagula reported, “as I first visited in 1991 when I was a student. In 2009, Temple and Tsinghua co-hosted a conference on experiential legal education in Qingdao, bringing together some of the most creative and thoughtful law professors in China and the United States.”
The 2009 conference on experiential legal education was coordinated by Tsinghua Professor Chen Jianmin and Temple Professor Eleanor Myers. The faculty who attended this program have become members of the Temple Law Alumni Association of China, many of whom report that they continue to use the skills they learned at this conference in their classrooms today.
Lecture in Ocean University of China
2017 marked John’s third visit to Qingdao, where he delivered his lecture, “U.S. Legal Education and its Recent Developments.” Both events were standing-room-only, as students had great interest and detailed questions on international legal education.
November 23-24 correspond to the U.S. Thanksgiving Day holiday. John said, “This sure was a special way to spend the holiday. I’m grateful for the chance to witness the development of Qingdao and also to speak at law schools I haven’t visited before. I’m also grateful to our Class of 2012 alum Li Hongbo for joining me for a Qingdao Thanksgiving Dinner.”
Many thanks to Professor Yu Ming at OUC and Geng Yan at Qingdao University for making the arrangements and moderating the lectures at each school. Thanks, too, to the president of the Temple Law Alumni Association of China, Jiang Qi, for making the introductions. Jiang Qi is director of Beijing DHH Law Firm, which has a large presence in Qingdao.
“I am overcome by everyone’s graciousness in Qingdao,” John remarked, “and I look forward to welcoming more students (and future alumni) from this wonderful city.”
