Beijing Braces for a Smoggy Lunar New Year

We’ve been enjoying day after day of blue skies and fresh air, but unfortunately our beautiful winter weather will come to an end very soon.

Heavy pollution is expected to cover a large part of northern China, including the capital, just ahead of Chinese New Year. The dreaded smog has already started rolling into Beijing and will linger until Thursday, according to a statement released by China’s National Environment Monitoring Center on Sunday.

Beijing will have a brief break from the smog on Friday, but the pollution is predicted to worsen once again on Saturday, just in time for Lunar New Year.

Beijing authorities have been making efforts to combat the city’s smog problem, which has been especially bad this winter. They have already clamped down on the sale of fireworks in the capital in an effort to curb pollution during the holiday, and they recently announced that China plans to invest USD2.6 million into anti-pollution efforts.

Despite all of this, it looks like those of us who are staying in the capital during the Spring Festival will just have to cope with another round of smog.
