Wifi, Beds Coming Soon to China's High-Speed Trains
By Bridget O'Donnell
Great news for all you frequent high-speed train travelers! China has unveiled a new train model that is equipped with Wifi and foldable beds, making rail transit more convenient than ever before.
Train maker CRRC unveiled the 16-car CRH5E model, nicknamed "Panda" for its black and white design, on Monday in Changchun.
A total of 13 carriages on the new Panda trains will be equipped with compartments that have both seats and beds. The beds can be folded into seats during the day.
Passengers will also have access to Wifi, and the compartments will be equipped with sockets and USB ports to charge devices.
As an added bonus, the trains, which are able to move at speeds of up to 250km per hour, are also built to resist freezing temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celcius. Extra sound proofing and vibration damping will also keep noise in the carriages to a minimum.
No word yet on when exactly the Panda trains will make their way onto China's massive 19,000km (and growing) network, but we sure hope it's soon!
