Evolution of Jazz in Beijing: the Ah-Q Story
Named after the main character in a Lu Xun novel, the Ah-Q Jazz Arkestra has stubbornly found its own niche in the Beijing jazz scene for more than a decade, bringing together an eclectic mix of musicians, styles,and original jazz compositions. Come hear their story, and enjoy the playful creative sounds of Ah-Q.
The band's original line-up, playing regularly at the now missed Beijing CD Jazz Club, included saxophonist Atsushi Ouchi (now playing in New York), drummer Andy Collier (now playing in Hong Kong), as well as the amazing Canadian duo Nathalie Craan on vocals and jazz composer and educator Dave Beckstead on guitar.
Over the years, the group has featured some of Beijing’s finest jazz musicians, including in the early days bassist Huang Yong, drummer Xiao Dou and trumpeter Wen Zhiyong, as well as more recently Shi Yuji and WuLetian on saxophone, Xia Ji, Qin Jiannan and Simone Schirru on guitar, Xing Yifan on bass, and Kyle Gregory and Wang Huaxing on trumpet.

Come and enjoy an evening of latin music originating from Cuba, a music that has captivated the world for since the mid 20th century. The band features some of the finest musicians in China and features special guest, Namhoon Kim, a famous latin percussionist from South Korea who spent quite a few years in Cuba, learning and experiencing the music from the source. The band will perform various style of latin music such as Son, Borelo, Chacha, Mambo, Samba, Danzon, Rumba, Naningo/Bembe and Guaracha. We hope you will join us on what will be sure to be memorable evening of music.

Cole Albert Porter (June 9, 1891 – October 15, 1964) was an American composer and songwriter. Born to a wealthy family in Indiana, he defied the wishes of his domineering grandfather and took up music as a profession. Classically trained, he was drawn towards musical theatre. After a slow start, he began to achieve success in the 1920s, and by the 1930s he was one of the major songwriters for the Broadway musical stage. Unlike many successful Broadway composers, Porter wrote the lyrics, as well as the music, for his songs.
Porter's other musicals include Fifty Million Frenchmen, Du Barry Was a Lady, Anything Goes, Can-Can and Silk Stockings. His numerous hit songs include "Night and Day","Begin the Beguine", "I Get a Kick Out of You", "Well, Did You Evah!", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" and "You're the Top". He also composed scores for films from the 1930s to the 1950s, including Born to Dance (1936), which featured the song "You'd Be So Easy to Love"; Rosalie (1937), which featured "In the Still of the Night"; High Society (1956), which included "True Love"; and Les Girls (1957).
